Chapter 9 - Smoke and Steel

The room erupted into a deafening symphony of violence.
Through the dense gray smoke filling the study, two tactical operatives in full black ballistic gear stepped through the splintered doorway, their assault rifles raised.
Marco fired first, his left-handed shots catching the lead operative in the shoulder and spinning him hard against the wall. But the second operative returned fire with ruthless efficiency, a burst of submachine gun rounds shredding the armchair where little Elena was hiding.
"No!" Clara screamed, forgetting every instinct of self-preservation. She started to stand up, but Dante grabbed her jacket collar with brutal strength, yanking her back down behind the desk just as a hail of bullets chewed through the wood inches above their heads.
Dante didn't waste a second. He leaned out from behind the desk, firing two controlled shots through the smoke.
Bang. Bang.
The second operative dropped instantly, his rifle clattering against the hardwood floor.
Silence descended on the room for a fraction of a second, broken only by the hiss of a ruptured water pipe in the hallway and Elena’s terrified sobbing from beneath the ruined armchair.
"Elena!" Clara cried out, scrambling past Dante before he could stop her. She sprinted across the room, ignoring the broken glass crunching beneath her knees, and dove behind the chair.
The little girl was curled into a tight ball, trembling from head to toe, her face pale as paper. Clara scooped her up into her arms, pulling her tight against her chest, whispering frantic words of comfort into her curls.
"I've got you, baby. You're safe. I've got you," Clara choked out, tears finally breaking free down her own cheeks.
Elena buried her face in Clara’s neck. For the first time since they had met in the diner, the little girl’s arms wrapped tightly around Clara’s shoulders, holding on for dear life.
Across the room, Dante and Marco were securing the doorway when a heavy shadow filled the shattered frame.
It wasn't another tactical operative.
Standing in the doorway, casually brushing a speck of dust off the lapel of his tailored charcoal suit, was Julian Vance. He looked entirely unbothered by the blood staining the hallway floor or the bodies of his own men crumpled nearby. He held a sleek, silenced pistol loosely in his right hand, the barrel pointed casually toward the floor.
"Well, well, well," Julian smiled, his voice smooth and cultured, echoing off the damaged walls. "Family reunions are always so terribly messy, aren't they, Dante?"
Dante stood tall in front of the mahogany desk, his Sig Sauer leveled squarely at his cousin's chest, his knuckles white around the grip.
"It ends here, Julian," Dante said, his voice a low, lethal growl. "Your men are dead. The police are five minutes out. And the drive is already uploaded."
Julian chuckled, a dry, mocking sound. "Dante, you always were a sentimental fool. You really think a few corrupt cops and a flash drive can touch me? The world doesn't run on justice, cousin. It runs on leverage."
Julian raised his silenced pistol, shifting his aim just an inch to the side—straight toward the corner where Clara was holding little Elena.

"And right now," Julian whispered, his eyes gleaming with cold malice, "my leverage just walked into the room."
