Chapter 10 - The Cabin in the Pines

The armored federal suburban tore through the dense, rain-soaked pine forest with its headlights off, relying on thermal imaging cameras to navigate the muddy logging road without tripping any perimeter sensors. In the backseat, I sat flanked by two federal marshals, my fingers gripping the edge of my tactical vest as the familiar silhouettes of the northern mountains loomed against the stormy night sky.
Up ahead, through the thick veil of falling rain, the cabin appeared like a jagged silhouette of glass and timber. It looked dark, abandoned, and utterly silent—exactly the kind of place where secrets went to die.
"All units, hold position fifty yards out," Agent Thorne’s voice crackled quietly over the encrypted earpiece. "Thermal scans show two heat signatures inside the main level, and one localized pulse beneath the subfloor near the hearth. This is a high-risk extraction. Move in pairs, sweep every corner."
The vehicle came to a smooth, silent stop behind a dense cluster of birch trees. The doors opened in unison, and the heavy damp smell of pine and wet earth filled my lungs.
I stepped out onto the damp ground, refusing to stay behind in the vehicle. Clara had stayed back at the federal bunker under armed guard, but I had insisted on coming. This was where the nightmare had taken its deepest roots, and this was where it had to be confronted.
Detective Vance flanked my left side, his hand resting reassuringly near his holster as we moved stealthily toward the wide wooden porch of the cabin. The front door was unlocked, swinging slightly ajar in the cold mountain wind with a low, rhythmic squeak.
Vance raised his hand, signaling the team to halt. He pushed the door open the rest of the way with the barrel of his rifle, stepping inside the familiar, cavernous living room.
The interior was untouched, perfectly preserved as if we had just walked out yesterday—except for a single laptop sitting open on the dining table, its screen casting a cold blue glow across the empty room. A live audio feed was looping a repeating recording of Luke’s voice.
“...you belong to me...”
"It's a decoy," Vance muttered, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the shadows. "The heat signatures upstairs were automated body dummies rigged with thermal pads."
Before he could finish the sentence, the heavy wooden floorboards beneath the stone hearth clicked with a loud, mechanical snap. The massive stone fireplace began to slide slowly backward into the wall, revealing a dark, descending staircase plunging down into the earth.

From the blackness below, a slow, mocking applause echoed up through the open vault.
"Welcome home, Caroline," Luke’s real voice drifted up from the dark, cold and laced with a terrifying, absolute certainty. "I knew you couldn't stay away."
