Chapter 6 - Crossfire in the Stairwell

The hallway transformed into a thunderclap of sound and fury in less than a heartbeat.
Before the blond woman in the trench coat could acquire her new target in the stairwell, Detective Vance lunged out from behind the heavy fire door like a freight train, his service weapon already raised and locked. He didn't hesitate; he tackled the assailant mid-turn, driving her hard against the opposite drywall with a sickening crunch of plaster and breaking studs. The silenced pistol flew from her grip, skidding across the hardwood floor and coming to a rest right against my bare feet.
"Down on the ground! Do it now!" Vance roared, pressing his knee firmly into the small of her back while keeping his weapon trained on her neck.
Smoke hung heavy in the air, smelling sharply of cordite and burnt insulation. My ears rang with a high-pitched, deafening whine that drowned out the frantic shouts echoing from neighboring apartments as doors began to fly open up and down the hallway.
"Caroline! Get back inside!" Vance barked over the ringing in my ears, his face flushed and sweat beading on his forehead. "Don't touch that gun—stay behind the threshold!"
I couldn't move. My legs had turned to water. I stared down at the black metal pistol sitting inches from my toes, the reality of how close I had come to a bullet crashing over me with tidal force. Luke hadn't just arranged for a legal defense; he had activated a contingency plan. A professional. Someone who didn't care about courtrooms, judges, or restraining orders.
"She wasn't alone," I choked out, my voice barely piercing the fog in my head as I pointed a shaking hand toward the stairwell door, which was swinging slowly on its hinges. "There was someone else... I heard footsteps on the lower landing."
Vance’s eyes darted toward the stairwell. He keyed the mic on his shoulder radio with his free hand, shouting for immediate tactical backup and a perimeter lockdown of the entire block. "Dispatch, officer down-adjacent situation at unit 304, suspect contained, potential secondary operative on site, need immediate backup on the north alley—"
A sudden commotion from downstairs interrupted him. Heavy boots pounded up the concrete steps, and a second plainclothes detective burst through the fire door, breathless and scanning the hallway with a rifle drawn.
"Clear!" the second detective shouted, his eyes sweeping the scene. "Alley is sealed, rear exit is locked down. Nobody’s getting out this way."

Beneath Vance, the blond woman didn't struggle or scream. She let out a cold, chilling laugh, her face pressed flat against the cracked drywall. As the backup detective yanked her wrists together behind her back and snapped the steel cuffs into place, she turned her head just enough to lock her eyes directly onto mine.
"You think a cage with bars keeps a tiger out, sweetheart?" she spat, a thin line of blood trickling from the corner of her mouth. "Luke owns more than you think. This city belongs to the people who write the checks."
