Chapter 6 - The Breach at Midnight

The high-pitched wail of the perimeter alarm cut through the heavy air of the east wing like a jagged knife.

Red light pulsed from the wall-mounted security panel, casting long, frantic shadows across the stone fireplace and the velvet sofa where Leo still slumbered peacefully. Julian Vance lunged forward, his face pale with sudden, sharp panic as he grabbed his daughter’s arm.

“Clara, we need to move—now!” Julian hissed, his voice trembling despite his high-powered courtroom bravado. “That’s not a routine security alert. That’s a tactical assault. Federal agents or rival syndicates, it doesn't matter—we are sitting ducks in this glass-and-stone cage!”

Clara pulled her arm gently from her father’s grip, her eyes fixed on the heavy oak door that Rico had just closed behind him.

“I’m not running, Dad,” Clara said, her voice steady, carrying a quiet resilience that startled Julian into silence. She looked down at Leo, who twitched slightly at the noise but remained asleep, cocooned in the cashmere throw. “He’s out there. And so is his son.”

Before Julian could argue further, the solid oak door swung open with a sharp click.

Dante stood in the threshold, his massive frame filling the doorway. His breathing was heavy, and a dark stain of fresh blood smeared across the shoulder of his black tactical vest, though he didn't seem to notice it. His hand gripped the grip of an automatic weapon with white-knuckled intensity.

“Boss sent me,” Dante said, his deep voice dropping into an urgent whisper. “Sector Four perimeter sensors are tripped. A convoy of three unmarked black SUVs just rammed the outer iron security gates. They aren't federal marshals. They’re moving too fast, and they’re carrying heavy ordnance.”

Julian’s eyes widened. “Rival syndicate? The other families?”

“The Falcone crew,” Dante growled, his jaw tightening into a knot of pure muscle. “They think Rico’s vulnerable because of the federal raid tonight. They think they can take the boy and break the family line in one sweep.” Dante looked past Julian, locking his intense gaze onto Clara. “Miss Vance, you need to get the boy into the panic room behind the master armory immediately. Follow me.”

Clara didn't hesitate. She knelt by the sofa, scooped Leo up into her arms, and held him tight against her chest. The boy stirred, letting out a frightened whimper, but wrapped his tiny arms around her neck instantly.

“I’ve got you, Leo,” Clara whispered into his dark hair. “Mommy’s right here.”

Wait—the word slipped out of her mouth, unbidden, natural, terrifyingly real. Clara didn't correct herself. She just turned to Dante. “Lead the way.”

As they rushed out into the dimly lit, vaulted hallway, the first concussive boom of a flashbang grenade echoed from the courtyard below, shaking the mansion’s foundation and plunging the estate into sudden, chaotic darkness.
