Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Estate

The hallway smelled of ozone, old cedar, and the metallic tang of fear.

Dante moved with terrifying agility for a man of his size, sweeping the corners of the intersecting corridors with his weapon raised while Clara followed closely behind him, shielding Leo’s head against her shoulder. Julian brought up the rear, his breathing ragged and shallow as he tried to keep pace with the younger adults.

“How many of them are there?” Julian panted, his expensive loafers clicking frantically against the hardwood floor.

“At least ten professional hitters,” Dante muttered over his shoulder, pausing at the heavy iron door of the master armory. He punched a complex numerical code into the electronic keypad and slammed his palm against a biometric scanner. The heavy steel door hissed open, revealing a hidden, reinforced concrete safe room lit by dim emergency red strips. “They’re trying to flush us out. But Rico’s already waiting for them in the courtyard.”

Clara stepped inside the cool, concrete sanctuary, her heart hammering against her ribs. She gently placed Leo on a cot lined with blankets, whispering soothing words until the boy buried his face in a pillow, trying to block out the distant pops of gunfire echoing through the mansion.

She turned back to the doorway, grabbing Dante’s tactical vest. “Where is Rico?”

“He’s doing what he does best,” Dante said grimly, pulling a spare Glock from a wall mount and checking the magazine clip. “He’s hunting them before they reach the east wing. Miss Vance, stay inside this room. Lock the internal deadbolt. Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice—or his.”

“Dante—!” Clara started.

Before she could finish, Dante slammed the heavy steel door shut, the thick locks engaging with a heavy, final thud that cut off the sounds of the corridor.

Julian paced the length of the concrete bunker, his hands trembling as he pushed his glasses up his nose. “This is insane. We are trapped in a mob boss’s panic room while a cartel shootout happens upstairs. We need to call the police!”

“And tell them what, Dad?” Clara snapped, turning on him with a ferocity that stopped him dead in his tracks. “That we’re hiding from assassins at a mafia safehouse? The local police are three miles away, and half of them are probably on the payroll anyway. Stop panicking and help me secure this door.”

For the next ten minutes, time fractured into agonizing fragments. Faint, muffled sounds of violence drifted down through the air vents—the sharp crack of suppressed gunfire, the heavy thud of bodies hitting walls, and the terrifying shattering of antique glass from the grand foyer downstairs.

Then, abruptly, the shooting stopped.

A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the mansion. The emergency red lights hummed in the concrete bunker, casting an eerie glow over Leo, who had finally fallen back into an exhausted, deep sleep on the cot.

Clara stood frozen by the steel door, her ear pressed against the cold metal.
