Chapter 3 - The Cold Alliance

A sickening crunch echoed through the warehouse loading bay as Michael staggered backward, blood instantly gush from his nose across his upper lip. He let out a furious roar, swinging the heavy wrench in a wide, lethal arc that missed Vanessa’s shoulder by inches, splintering a wooden shipping pallet instead.
"Run, Claire!" Vanessa screamed, scrambling backward over the frozen floorboards toward my makeshift bed. But running was impossible; my body was gripped by a dual contraction that left me paralyzed with pain, my hands clawing against the frost-covered concrete.
"You stupid bitch!" Michael snarled, wiping the blood from his face with the back of his sleeve, his eyes wild with rage. He lunged past the open freezer door, closing in on Vanessa with terrifying speed.
Vanessa grabbed a frozen box of medical supplies and hurled it at his chest, buying herself a second of time, but Michael caught her by the collar of her blazer, slamming her hard against the exterior wall of Freezer Vault 7. The wind rushed out of her lungs in a sharp gasp.
"You want to play hero?" Michael whispered, raising the heavy wrench high above his head. "Let's see how well you audit the morgue."
Every instinct of self-preservation I had honed over a lifetime vanished beneath the primal, ferocious protective instinct of a mother. I couldn't walk, I couldn't stand, but I could still move. Grabbing the heavy steel emergency fire extinguisher mounted to the interior wall beside the door frame, I twisted the safety pin with my teeth, hauled the heavy canister into my lap, and hurled it with every ounce of my remaining strength directly at the back of Michael’s knees.
The heavy metal cylinder caught Michael squarely behind the legs. With a sharp crack, his knees buckled, and he crashed down hard onto the freezing concrete, dropping the wrench with a deafening clatter.
Vanessa didn't hesitate. She dropped her full weight onto his back, pinning his arms to the floor while kicking the wrench away across the slippery ice.
"Claire!" Vanessa yelled, gasping for air as Michael thrashed violently beneath her. "Get out of here! The baby—your water broke—you have to get out of this freezer right now!"
"I can't!" I cried out, my body shaking uncontrollably as another wave of intense pressure tore through me. I looked down in absolute terror. In the dim, flickering light, I saw the tiny head of my first baby crowning against my torn maternity leggings.

There was no time to escape. The delivery was happening right here, on the floor of a minus-forty-nine-degree tomb.
