Chapter 4 - Birth in the Ice

"Listen to me, Claire!" Vanessa yelled, managing to pin Michael’s wrist under her knee while he choked out foul curses beneath her. She looked over her shoulder, her expression shifting from fierce combat to absolute, unadulterated shock as she saw what was happening. "Oh God. Oh sweet Jesus. Okay. Okay, we are doing this right now."

"Vanessa... help me," I sobbed, the cold biting deep into my bones, numbing my skin while white-hot fire burned through my lower body.

"I'm right here," Vanessa said, her voice cracking as she scrambled off Michael, instantly kicking him in the ribs hard enough to keep him dazed on the floor before sliding across the ice to my side. She ripped off her warm wool winter coat, spreading it frantically over my shivering legs to create a tiny barrier against the brutal sub-zero air.

"Push, Claire! Push!" Vanessa commanded, her hands trembling as she positioned herself to catch the baby.

The horror of our situation faded into a blinding tunnel of pain and survival. I grabbed the frozen metal pallet rack behind me, pulled with all my might, and screamed into the freezing air as I pushed with every ounce of my soul.

A sharp, high-pitched cry pierced the low hum of the refrigeration units.

"I've got him! I've got him!" Vanessa sobbed, her face stained with tears and sweat. She scooped up the tiny, fragile bundle of life, immediately ripping off her own silk scarf and wrapping the newborn infant tightly against her chest inside her blouse, sharing her body heat. "It's a boy! Claire, he's breathing! He's crying!"

Before we could even draw a breath of relief, a second, agonizing contraction seized my body.

"There's another one!" I screamed, my vision blurring at the edges as black spots danced across my eyes. Hypothermia was taking over; my limbs felt heavy, like lead.

"Push, Claire, push for both of them!" Vanessa cried, holding my firstborn against her heart with one arm while reaching down to guide the second twin.

With a final, desperate roar that echoed off the stainless-steel walls, I pushed.

A second sharp cry joined the first.

"It's a girl!" Vanessa laughed hysterically through her tears, pulling the second infant into her jacket alongside her brother. "Twins, Claire! You have a healthy boy and girl!"

We had survived the impossible. We had beaten the cold.

Then, a cold, metallic click echoed from the doorway behind us.
