Chapter 1 - Dust and Whispers

From beneath the low frame of Maya’s bed, the world shrank to a claustrophobic sliver of hardwood, stray dust motes, and the rhythmic pounding of my own pulse.
Three pairs of sneakers and one pair of black school flats stood frozen near the threshold. The smell drifted down to me first—not the sweet vanilla lotion Maya usually wore, but a sharp, stale tang of unwashed clothes, cheap peanut butter, and sheer, unfiltered panic.
“Are you sure she’s gone?” a boy’s voice whispered. It cracked midway up, belonging to someone whose voice was only beginning to change.
“I told you, my mom leaves for the bank at seven-thirty and never comes back until six,” Maya replied. Her tone lacked the sweet, compliant melody she used with me. It was sharp, defensive, and hardened far beyond her thirteen years. “Leo, stop pacing. You’re tracking mud on the rug.”
“I’m hungry, Maya,” whimpered a much smaller voice—a girl’s voice, small and fragile.
My heart hammered against the floorboards. A boy. A younger girl. Who were they? Why were they hiding in my house?
“Shut up, Chloe,” the boy—Leo—snapped softly, though there was no real malice in it, only exhaustion. “Just sit down. We’ve got crackers left from yesterday.”
Dust particles danced in the pale shaft of morning light cutting through the gap in the curtains. My knees were aching, locked in a cramped knot against my chest, but I couldn't move. A single twitch of the mattress overhead, a stray breath, and everything I thought I knew about my daughter would shatter completely.
I watched a pair of scuffed white sneakers shuffle toward the closet. The wooden floorboards groaned.
“Maya,” Leo said, his voice dropping to a nervous whisper that made the hair on my arms stand up. “Somebody was here. Look at the coat rack.”
Silence fell over the bedroom. A heavy, suffocating silence.
“What do you mean?” Maya hissed.
May you like
“The umbrella. It’s turned the other way. And... isn’t that your mom’s travel mug on the counter by the door?”
From my vantage point beneath the bed, I saw Maya’s flats shift sharply, spinning around to face the bedroom door as the blood drained from whatever secret world she had built right under my nose.
