Chapter 8 - The Threshold of Escape

I hit the floor hard, the wind knocked completely out of my lungs.

“Mom!” Maya shrieked, turning back from the porch and grabbing onto my arm, trying desperately to pull me free as the intruder loomed over us, his face purple with fury, a thin trickle of blood running from a gash on his forehead where the lamp had struck him.

“You’re not going anywhere, you little brats,” the man rasped, his breathing heavy and ragged as he reached down to grab Maya by her collar.

A sharp, metallic clack rang out from the front yard.

“Step away from the children! Savannah Police Department! Drop to your knees right now!”

The booming, authoritative command froze everyone in the hallway. Framed in the open doorway stood a uniform officer with his service weapon drawn and aimed squarely at the intruder's chest, followed immediately by a second officer rushing up the front steps with a radio crackling wildly at his shoulder.

Mrs. Gable, the neighbor from across the street, stood safely behind them on the sidewalk, pointing aggressively toward our front door.

The man’s hand hovered frozen over Maya’s shoulder. His eyes darted from the drawn gun to the open doorway, calculating the odds in a fraction of a second. Slowly, deliberately, he let his arms drop to his sides and raised his palms into the air.

“I didn't do anything,” he muttered, his tone instantly shifting from vicious predator to aggrieved citizen. “These kids were trespassing. I was just helping them out.”

“Shut your mouth and get on the ground!” the lead officer barked, stepping across the threshold and kicking the man’s legs out from under him.

Within seconds, plastic zip-ties were locked tightly around the intruder's wrists, and he was hauled roughly to his feet, dragged out into the bright morning light as neighbors began stepping out onto their porches to watch the spectacle.

I lay flat on the hardwood floor, my chest heaving, the adrenaline slowly draining out of my body and leaving behind a hollow, trembling ache in every joint.
