Chapter 7 - The Weight of a Choice

My mind raced through a frantic, desperate calculus. There was no escape down the tunnel behind us—it was a dead end with no other exits. And climbing that ladder meant walking straight into a calculated execution.
"Don't do it," I whispered, stalling for time, my hand sliding backward behind my back to grope blindly along the cold stone wall for anything—a loose brick, a rusted pipe, a heavy tool. My fingers brushed against a jagged iron bracket bolted into the masonry.
"Time's up," Thomas snapped, his eyes narrowing as he took another step down the ladder, raising the barrel of the gun directly toward Lily’s small frame. "Move, or I—"
Before he could finish the threat, a heavy, deafening roar tore through the mouth of the tunnel behind us.
It wasn't a gunshot. It was the deep, thunderous boom of the main estate’s backup generator exploding, followed immediately by the seismic shudder of concrete groaning under immense pressure. The blast wave whipped through the underground chamber like a localized hurricane, blowing out the flashlight in my hand and plunging us back into pitch blackness.
Thomas cursed loudly, his flashlight beam swinging wildly away from us as he tried to regain his footing on the slick iron rungs.
"Now!" I screamed, grabbing Leo by the collar and scooping Lily up in a blind, frantic rush.
We didn't head for the ladder. Instead, I veered off into a narrow, unlit utility alcove branching off the main stone chamber—a space Dominic had pointed out on the blueprint blueprint monitor as a water-valve control station.

Behind us, a suppressed weapon barked twice in rapid succession. The heavy slugs chipped white sparks off the stone wall just inches above my head, screaming into the darkness like angry hornets.
"Keep running! Don't look back!" I gasped, dragging the children into the cramped, metallic enclosure of the valve room and slamming a heavy iron door shut behind us, dropping the deadbolt into place just as Thomas’s heavy boots pounded against the stone floor outside.
