Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Sub-Basement

The metal door rattled violently under a heavy kick from the outside, the steel frame groaning inward by half an inch.
"Open the door, Ms. Carter!" Thomas’s voice roared from the hallway, stripped of its polite facade now, replaced by the desperate fury of a cornered rat. "You can't hide down here! The river tide is coming in—this whole level will flood within twenty minutes!"
He wasn't lying. I could already hear it: a low, rhythmic sloshing sound echoing from the drainage grates near the floor, accompanied by the cold, damp smell of rising river water.
I swept the beam of my pocket-sized keychain light across the tiny room. There were no windows, no secondary doors, and no vents large enough for a child to crawl through. We were trapped in a steel box with a ticking clock.
"Mommy, I'm scared," Leo whimpered, his small frame shaking uncontrollably as he sat huddled beneath a row of rusted copper pipes. Lily was clutching my neck so hard her fingernails dug into my skin, her big eyes wide and unblunderstanding of the lethal game being played around us.
"I've got you," I whispered, my voice breaking as I desperately searched the control panel on the wall. My fingers danced across the rusted valve wheels, turning them left and right, hoping against hope for a hidden override switch.
Clang. Clang.
Another brutal strike hit the door, and the deadbolt assembly cracked, a sliver of hallway light cutting across the dark room. Thomas was about to break through.
Then, a sudden, sharp sound echoed from the far side of the wall behind us—not from the hallway, but from deep within the solid concrete partition itself.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
It was a rhythmic knocking, heavy and deliberate, coming from the other side of the drainage shaft.
I froze, pressing my ear against the vibrating metal of the water-control manifold. A muffled voice shouted through the concrete, distorted by distance and rushing water, but carrying a tone of absolute command that made my heart leap into my throat.

"...Carter! Can you hear me?!"
It was Dominic.
