Chapter 2 - The Redirection Protocol

The living room transformed into a chaotic staging ground within seconds. Officer Torres, a veteran with salt-and-pepper hair and sharp, assessing eyes, immediately took control of the scene. He swept his gaze from Eli, who was now being carefully secured to a spinal board by Vance's partner, to the four adults standing in a tense, jagged circle.

"Who called 911?" Torres asked, stepping forward while keeping his hand uncomfortably close to his belt.

"I did," I said, stepping past my father’s blockade. My voice was dangerously steady, cold with the shock of adrenaline. "My name is Clara Miller. That is my son, Eli. My brother, Ryan Miller, assaulted him. He is unconscious, and my parents—" I pointed a trembling finger at the two people who had raised me "—stood by and watched while covering for him."

Torres glanced at Ryan, who had already retreated toward the hallway archway, his hands shoved deep into his pockets in a practiced display of indifference. "Mr. Miller? Step away from the wall. Hands where I can see them."

"I haven't done anything wrong," Ryan muttered, though he obeyed the command, his eyes darting toward the front door as if calculating the odds of a sprint into the freezing December night. "The kid fell. He tripped over his own feet coming down the stairs. Everyone in this house saw it."

My mother found her voice, rushing forward with her hands raised in a frantic plea. "Officer, please. It's a misunderstanding. Ryan is high-strung, yes, but Clara is exhausted. She works too much at that corporate firm, she’s paranoid, and the boy is clumsy—"

"Stop lying," I snapped, turning on her with a fury that made her recoil. "Stop protecting him! Look at Eli's face! Look at the jaw!"

Torres held up a hand to silence the room, his radio crackling with urgent dispatch chatter. "Ma'am, step back. Let the medical team work." He turned his attention back to Vance, who was handing over the encrypted tablet.

"Officer," Vance said quietly, tapping the glass screen. "Take a look at the registry flag. This isn't a simple domestic dispute. This address is linked to an active probation violation alert from out of state, and Miller has an alias under his mother’s maiden name."

Ryan’s face lost whatever color remained in it. "You're full of it. That was expunged!"

"Juvenile records seal at eighteen, Miller," Torres said coldly, reading the scrolling text on the tablet. "But violent felony adjudications involving severe bodily harm don't just vanish when you cross state lines, especially when federal database updates catch up during a medical incident dispatch. You skipped your mandatory anger management restitution in nineteen-eighteen."

My father finally stepped forward, his posture rigid with offended authority. "Officer, I am a respected member of this community. I demand to know—"

"Shut your mouth, Dad," I whispered, the words carrying more venom than a shout. I walked right up to my father, staring up into the face of the man who had taught me that family loyalty mattered more than truth. "You let him do this to me when we were kids. You hid his grades, you paid off his debts, you blamed me for crying. And you brought him into my home. You let him live under the same roof as my son."

"Clara, we were protecting the family name," my father hissed under his breath, leaning down so only I could hear. "If this gets out, your corporate position, your stock options, our reputation in this town—it’s all gone."

"I don't care," I said aloud, turning so Torres and Vance could hear every syllable. "I don't care about the company. I don't care about the name. Arrest him."

Torres pulled out his steel cuffs, the metallic click echoing sharply in the quiet hallway. "Ryan Miller, turn around and put your hands behind your back."

May you like

Ryan didn't move. Instead, a cold, chilling smile spread across his lips as he looked past the officer, straight at me. "You think arresting me fixes this, Clara? You think I'm the only one with secrets in this house?"
