Chapter 8 - The Federal Overrule

Harrison’s hand froze mid-air, inches away from the flash drive. The fake security officer in the municipal uniform instantly reached for his holster, but two heavy-set figures in tactical vests swarmed out from the hospital sliding doors, their assault rifles leveled with professional precision.

"Hands on the vehicle! Do it now!" shouted the lead federal agent, a tall woman with silver-streaked hair pulled back into a tight bun and eyes like chipped flint. Her badge glinted under the yellow emergency lights: U.S. Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General.

Harrison didn't panic. With agonizing slowness, he lowered his hand, turning his head to look at the federal agent with a chillingly polite expression. "Agent Reyes. I wasn't aware the Inspector General's office handled routine corporate restructuring disputes."

"Corporate restructuring doesn't usually involve child endangerment, kidnapping threats, and municipal database tampering," Agent Reyes replied, stepping down the concrete ramp with her weapon trained squarely on Harrison’s chest. She flicked a glance at Ryan, who had frozen against the side of the sedan like a deer caught in high-beams. "And it certainly doesn't involve local patrol units running interference for an active federal money-laundering syndicate."

Ryan’s bravado shattered in an instant. He lunged backward, trying to yank the car door open, but one of the tactical agents was already on him, slamming him hard against the hood of the sedan and pinning his arms behind his back with a sharp metallic click.

"Get off me! You don't know who my family is!" Ryan screamed, his voice cracking into a frantic panic as his face was pressed against the cold metal. "Dad! Call Marcus! Call the lawyers!"

"Your father's house is currently being searched pursuant to a federal warrant signed twenty minutes ago," Agent Reyes said coldly, keeping her weapon steady as she approached me. She looked down at my hand, where I was still clutching the flash drive. "Ms. Miller? I’ll take that evidence now. Chain of custody."

I swallowed hard, my fingers trembling as I transferred the small black drive into her gloved hand. "My son," I managed to choke out. "They had someone in his room upstairs. A man with a syringe—"

"Our tactical team cleared the third-floor pediatric wing three minutes ago," Reyes interrupted gently, her tone softening just enough to anchor me against the wave of dizziness threatening to pull me under. "Your son is safe. The two individuals posing as medical staff are currently in cuffs in the basement stairwell."

Harrison watched the agents secure the scene, a thin, ironic smile playing across his lips. He didn't resist as an agent slapped a pair of heavy cuffs around his wrists. "You think you've uncovered the whole operation, Agent Reyes? Meridian is just a shell. By sunrise, every server containing those financial records will be wiped clean by automated scripts running out of a server farm in Zurich."

"Let them try," Reyes said, signaling for her team to escort the prisoners toward an unmarked van waiting at the end of the bay. "We mirrored your primary gateway servers an hour ago, Mr. Vance. Your encryption keys expired the moment you stepped onto hospital property."

As Harrison was led past me, he paused for a fraction of a second, his dark eyes locking onto mine with a message that made my blood run colder than the winter air.

"You think your family was just collateral damage, Clara?" he whispered softly as he walked by. "Ask your father what happened to the original owner of this house before your family bought it for pennies in nineteen-ninety-two."
