Chapter 9 - The Broker’s Price

The woman took a slow, measured step toward me, her heels clicking sharply against the concrete floor. She didn't look like a common criminal; she looked like a senior corporate executive addressing a disgruntled shareholder.

“You’re trespassing on federal aviation property, madam,” she said, her tone devoid of any real threat, dripping instead with bored condescension. “And you are holding a baby whose legal custody waiver has already been notarized and processed through three separate interstate jurisdictions.”

“Forged documents and bought signatures don't make it legal,” I shot back, stepping backward toward the hangar entrance, eyeing the distance back to the highway. “The police have the offshore records, the wire transfers, and Brandon’s confession. Your entire operation is collapsing around you right now.”

A faint, knowing smile touched the corners of the woman's lips.

“My operation, Mrs. Bennett, is international. A few low-level fixers in a midwestern suburb are entirely replaceable,” she replied smoothly. She reached into her trench coat pocket and pulled out a slim, gold-plated fountain pen. “Let’s be entirely pragmatic. You’re an ICU nurse, correct? You understand cost-benefit analysis. Raising an infant without financial backing, dealing with the social fallout of a disgraced family name, legal fees that will bankrupt your entire household... it’s an impossible burden.”

She gestured toward the mahogany table, where a checkbook lay open beside the laptop.

“I am authorized to offer a very generous relocation stipend,” she continued, her voice hypnotic and calculated. “Sign the final relinquishment release right now, walk out of this hangar with a quarter-million dollars wired directly to your personal account, and you never have to look at this mess again. You can retire in peace.”

I stared at the checkbook, a wave of cold disgust washing over me. They really thought everything had a price tag. They thought human lives, family, and love were just commodities to be traded on a balance sheet.

“My granddaughter is not for sale,” I whispered fiercely.

Before the woman could signal to the shadows behind her, the distant, screaming wail of a high-performance engine echoed from the entrance of the airstrip.
