Chapter 10 - The Encrypted Drive

The officer on the live feed reached into the suspect’s jacket pocket and pulled out a heavy-duty, military-grade encrypted hard drive, holding it up to the dashcam lens.
My breath hitched. That wasn't just a random flash drive. It was the master data storage unit for the entire regional adoption syndicate—containing every forged signature, every corrupted insurance file, and the real-time financial routing numbers of every high-level accomplice still operating within the city limits.
“Bring that unit straight to the hospital triage ward under maximum secure transport,” Sterling ordered into his radio, his eyes gleaming with professional triumph. “Do not let it out of your sight for a single second.”
He clicked the tablet off and turned back to us, a rare note of genuine reassurance in his voice. “It looks like your vigilance just blew the top off this entire operation.”
The mother let out a long, shuddering breath, sliding back into the chair beside her daughter’s bed. She reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from the sleeping girl’s forehead. For the first time since I walked into that overheated pantry hours ago, the crushing weight of fear seemed to lift from her shoulders, replaced by the quiet, unbreakable strength of a mother who had fought through hell to reclaim her child.

“She’s going to be okay,” the mother whispered softly, a tear slipping down her cheek, catching the harsh light of the monitor.
I stepped closer, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder as the steady, even heartbeat of the little girl echoed softly through the room, signaling a future that no one could ever steal away again.
