Chapter 4 - The Hospital Intake

The emergency department at St. Jude Memorial was a chaotic labyrinth of fluorescent lights, urgent pages over the intercom, and the frantic murmurs of triage nurses managing a crowded waiting room.

Because I identified myself as a licensed visiting clinician accompanying the family and detailed the exact nature of the chemical ingestion—specifically, illicit administration of a Schedule IV controlled substance to a minor—we were fast-tracked past the waiting area and straight into an acute pediatric trauma bay.

Within minutes, a brisk pediatric resident named Dr. Vance and two attending nurses swarmed the guesthouse bed.

“Alright, let’s get a secure IV line started, run a comprehensive metabolic panel, and initiate a full tox screen immediately,” Dr. Vance ordered, his movements efficient and practiced as he checked the girl’s pulse and pupil response.

The mother stood anxiously in the corner of the cubicle, clutching her purse so tightly her knuckles were white, watching as the medical team worked on her daughter. I stood beside her, offering a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

“She’s in the best possible hands now,” I murmured softly. “They’re going to find out exactly what’s in her system and flush it out safely.”

“I trusted her,” the mother whispered, staring blankly at the sterile white hospital wall. Her voice was hollow, stripped of all emotion. “My own mother. For six years, ever since my husband passed away, she was my rock. She told me she was helping me raise my daughter. And all this time... she was turning my home into a prison.”

Before I could formulate a comforting response, the sliding privacy curtain of the trauma bay was pulled open abruptly.

A tall, sharp-featured man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped into the cubicle, flashing a laminated plastic ID badge.

“Mrs. Moreland?” the man asked, his voice crisp and official.

The mother blinked, turning away from her daughter’s bed. “Yes? Who are you? I’m busy with my child’s doctors right now.”

“My name is Detective Marcus Sterling, City Child Protective Services and Special Investigations Unit,” the man introduced himself smoothly, though his eyes darted around the room with an unsettling, analytical coldness. “We received an urgent priority call twenty minutes ago regarding an alleged poisoning and domestic disturbance at your residence. I need to ask you a few questions about your prescription narcotics.”
