Chapter 4 - The Anonymous File

The notification was an email from a secure, encrypted domain I didn't recognize.

Leaning against the hallway wall for support while the paramedics rushed in with a rolling stretcher, I opened the message with trembling thumbs. Inside was a single PDF document and a brief, unformatted text message:

“They’ve been doing this for years. Here are the bank routing numbers for the previous fake campaigns under your husband's name. Check the offshore accounts.”

My breath hitched. I scrolled down, my eyes scanning columns of financial data, wire transfers, and shell corporations registered not just to Derek, but to Evelyn as well. This wasn't a desperate one-off scam born of recent debt. This was a multi-year enterprise built on exploiting illness, sympathy, and fabricated tragedies—and I had been cast as their final, most profitable prop.

“Mrs. Moreland, we need to move,” a paramedic said gently, guiding me toward the front door.

As they wheeled me out of the house, the night air hit my bare, sensitive scalp, sending a sharp sting through my skin. On the front lawn, neighbor lights were flickering on. A local news van was already pulling up to the curb, its high-beam headlights washing over the flashing red and blue strobes of the squad cars.

Derek and Evelyn were being led down the steps in handcuffs, their faces obscured by their jackets, though Evelyn was still screaming obscenities through the fabric.

Then, my phone buzzed again. It wasn't an email. It was a local banking alert tied to our joint household account.
