Chapter 8 - The Bail Bond Loophole

The rhythmic thumping of the fetal monitor seemed to stutter in my ears.
“Bail?” I repeated, my voice muffled by the oxygen mask. I ripped the plastic strap away from my face, ignoring the nurse's attempt to stop me. “How is that possible? He and his mother just cleaned out our accounts! Where did he get bail money in the middle of the night?”
“That’s the twist,” Detective Miller said, pulling up a financial ledger on his tablet screen. “The bail wasn't paid from your domestic accounts. It was posted by a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands—the exact same corporate entity that received the wire transfer two minutes before we raided the house.”
My mind raced, the pieces violently clicking together. “They had a backup account. They planned this entire livestream disaster knowing it might blow up in their faces, and they had a secondary lifeline ready to spring them the second they got booked.”
“Worse than that,” Miller added, stepping closer so the medical staff could continue working around him without overhearing every word. “Because Derek is still legally your husband and co-titular head of household, his defense attorney is already filing emergency injunctions claiming that you are mentally unstable, medically compromised, and incapable of managing your own assets or making custody decisions for the unborn child.”
The sheer audacity of it made my stomach churn with a sickening, acidic heat. They weren't just running a scam; they were launching a preemptive legal strike to paint me as the villain, turning my hospital bed into a cage where they could strip away my parental rights before I ever left the ward.

“They can't do that,” I whispered, my fingers clenching into the hospital sheets. “I have the video archives. I have the nurse’s testimony. I have the police report for physical assault.”
“Legally, they can try if you don't fight back immediately,” Miller warned, sliding a pen and a legal affidavit onto the tray table across my lap. “The judge is holding an emergency after-hours bond hearing via video conference in twenty minutes. If you want to retain sole protective custody and freeze those offshore assets permanently, you have to sign this emergency restraining order right now.”
