Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Foundation

The downtown concrete-and-glass tower of the Thorne Foundation stood like a dark monolith against the crisp morning sky.

Marcus parked the unmarked federal SUV right in the red zone by the revolving glass doors, leaving the hazard lights blinking. Beside me in the back seat, Eleanor checked the security clearance credentials on her tablet while I slid my weathered canvas jacket over my shoulders.

“The automated alert came from the basement data vault,” Eleanor said, tapping the screen. “According to Audrey’s preliminary ledger notes, that’s where Arthur housed the physical paper trails of the county infrastructure fund transfers—hard copies that weren't mirrored on the cloud servers.”

“Which means someone inside the family is still trying to sanitize the books before the federal audit team sweeps the building,” I replied, pushing the car door open and stepping out onto the wet pavement.

We moved past the empty security desks of the main lobby, our badges flashing the electronic turnstiles into a green compliance sweep. The building was dead silent, save for the hum of overhead fluorescent lights and the distant, rhythmic dripping of a maintenance pipe somewhere in the upper floors.

We took the service elevator down to Sub-Level Three, the air growing progressively colder and smelling faintly of ozone and old paper.

When the elevator doors slid open with a soft metallic chime, the hallway was pitch black.

I drew my sidearm, the familiar weight of the steel balancing instantly in my palm, and stepped out onto the concrete floor. Marcus flanked my left, his flashlight cutting a sharp, brilliant beam through the gloom, while Eleanor stayed close behind with her encrypted terminal tracking the local network ping.

“The signal is coming from Vault B,” Eleanor whispered, her finger pointing down a narrow corridor lined with reinforced steel doors. “End of the hall. The lock’s already been bypassed.”
