Chapter 8 - Miriam’s Gambit

We reached the heavy steel door of Vault B.
It stood ajar by six inches, a sliver of warm, amber light spilling out across the dust-moted concrete floor. Inside came the faint, rhythmic sound of paper tearing and the mechanical whir of an industrial shredder operating at full capacity.
Marcus raised his hand, signaling a two-count.
I nodded, kicked the heavy door wide open with my boot, and leveled my weapon into the room.
“Federal agents! Step away from the shredder!”
The machine instantly ground to a halt with a harsh mechanical groan.
Standing beside the large industrial cross-cut shredder, surrounded by waist-high stacks of yellowed ledger books and corporate portfolios, was Miriam Thorne.
She wasn't wearing her elegant silver-trimmed cardigan anymore. She wore a tailored black wool coat, her silver hair pulled back into a severe, immaculate bun. In her gloved right hand, she held a burning Zippo lighter over an open cardboard box filled with original property deeds and bank transfer slips.
She didn't scream. She didn't drop the lighter. She simply turned her head slowly, her cold, aristocratic eyes locking onto mine with an eerie, unyielding composure.
“You really don't know when to stop digging, do you, Thomas?” Miriam asked, her voice as smooth and emotionless as polished marble.
“Put the lighter down, Miriam,” I said, stepping across the threshold, my pistol held steady. “The building is surrounded by federal marshals. You aren't burning your way out of this.”
Miriam let out a dry, humorless laugh. “Arthur was a fool. He thought money and political handshakes could buy permanent safety. He forgot that the real foundation of this family was never built on concrete—it was built on absolute control.”

She lowered the flame an inch closer to the edge of the documents.
“Take one more step toward me,” Miriam whispered, her gaze sharpening into a lethal focus, “and I let go of the box. Every land title, every offshore routing number, and every name of every corrupt judge and municipal official in this state turns to ash in thirty seconds. You’ll never trace the money back to its source.”
