Chapter 10 - The Ghost’s Domain

Sebastian’s hand inched slowly toward his holster, but stopped as the lead mercenary pressed the muzzle of his rifle harder against Sebastian’s chest.
“Don’t be a hero, boy,” the captain warned, lowering his shotgun and nodding to the guards. “Disarm them.”
A heavy-set operative stepped forward, stripping the Sig Sauer from Sebastian’s holster and yanking the Glock right out of my trembling hand. I stumbled back against Sebastian, the sudden loss of the weapon making me feel utterly defenseless again.
“Who sent you?” Sebastian demanded, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. “Julian is dead. I put him in the ground.”
“Did you?”
A smooth, calm voice echoed down from the metal staircase above.
We looked up. A tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal overcoat descended the steps with slow, deliberate grace. His dark hair was slicked back, and his sharp, aristocratic features bore an undeniable, terrifying resemblance to the ghost stories Sebastian had whispered about.
Marcus Vane—or the man who pulled the strings behind the name—smiled down at us, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction.
“It’s a common mistake, Sebastian,” the man said softly, stepping onto the engine room floor. “You rich mob bosses always think that if you blow up a car, the man inside stays dead. But some ghosts refuse to rest until they’ve taken back everything that was stolen from them.”

Sebastian stared at him, the color draining entirely from his face. “You… you weren't in the car.”
“No,” Marcus replied smoothly, stepping right up until he was inches away from Sebastian. He glanced past him, his eyes locking onto me with cold curiosity. “And it looks like you brought a very expensive guest to our family reunion.”
