Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Exit

The service elevator descended into the dark, echoing depths of Crown Meridian Tower, bypassing the lobby where federal agents and rival enforcers were undoubtedly converging.

When the metal doors slid open with a dull clang, we stepped out into the subterranean parking garage. The air was thick with the smell of exhaust fumes, damp concrete, and stagnant water. Rows of high-end luxury vehicles sat under flickering fluorescent lights, silent and abandoned.

Sebastian kept one hand firmly gripping my arm, his eyes scanning every shadow as we hurried toward the far corner of the garage where an industrial steel door marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY stood ajar.

“Through here,” Sebastian whispered, pushing the heavy door open.

Beyond it lay a narrow, concrete maintenance tunnel that stretched into pitch blackness, lit only by occasional dim red emergency bulbs. The sound of our footsteps echoed hollowly against the curved walls.

“Where does this lead?” I asked, keeping my voice low, clutching the Glock so tightly my knuckles ached.

“To the old subway maintenance line,” Sebastian replied without slowing down. “It connects directly to the harbor piers. I have a freighter idling at Slip 12. Once we’re on board, we head out to international waters.”

“International waters?” I stopped walking, pulling back against his grip. “Sebastian, I have a life here! I have a job, an apartment, a family! You can’t just drag me onto a smuggler’s ship because your past caught up with you!”

Sebastian stopped, turning to face me in the dim red glow of the tunnel. His expression was a mix of exhaustion and fierce, unyielding protectiveness.

“Valerie, listen to me,” he said, his voice hard. “If you walk back out onto those streets right now, you are a walking target for a man who doesn't care about rules, collateral, or mercy. You are tied to me now. Whether you wanted to be or not, the moment you spent last night in my bed, your name went on the ledger.”

Before I could answer, a sharp, metallic click echoed down the long concrete tunnel behind us.

We both froze.

From the shadows fifty yards back where we had just entered, a heavy beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the red gloom, pinning us in its blinding glare.

“Well, well, well,” a metallic, amplified voice rang out down the corridor. “The king of New York tries to slip out the back door like a rat. Drop the bag, Sebastian. And tell the girl to drop the gun.”

Sebastian’s hand instantly slid back down to the Sig Sauer at his hip, his body tensing like a coiled spring.

“Stay behind me,” Sebastian murmured, stepping in front of me as three armed silhouettes emerged from the darkness down the tunnel, blocking our only way out.
