Chapter 10 - The Mexican Standoff

The air in the subterranean office froze instantly, thick with the smell of expensive scotch and impending violence.

"Drop the glass, Vincent," Jack commanded, his voice a lethal whisper that cut through the room like a razor. His pistol was leveled dead-center at his uncle’s chest.

The two guards snapped their weapons upward, aiming straight for Jack’s head. But before they could squeeze the triggers, Alara—acting on pure, unadulterated instinct—stepped out from behind Jack’s broad shoulder, leveling the heavy matte black submachine gun she had scavenged from the safehouse directly at the guard on the left.

"I wouldn't," Alara said, her voice remarkably steady, echoing with a terrifying coolness she didn't know she possessed.

The guard froze, his eyes darting between Jack and the barrel of Alara's weapon.

Vincent Vance slowly lowered his glass to the glass desk, a thin, amused smile curving his lips. He looked past Jack, his gaze locking onto Alara with a look of predatory curiosity.

"Ah," Vincent purred, leaning back in his leather chair. "The diner waitress. I must admit, Clara—or is it Alara?—you have proven to be an extraordinarily expensive nuisance. Tell me, how much is he paying you to throw your life away?"

"Not enough," Alara shot back, her finger resting lightly against the trigger.

Jack took a deliberate step forward into the room, his eyes boring into his uncle with forty years of buried rage. "It ends tonight, Vincent. The ledger, the trust, the kids—it all comes back to where it belongs."

Vincent chuckled softly, resting his elbows on the desk. He didn't look like a man at gunpoint; he looked like a chess player who had just sacrificed a knight to trap the king.

"And how do you plan on walking out of here, Jack?" Vincent asked smoothly, lifting a small remote control from the desk. "When the emergency lockdown protocols trigger in exactly thirty seconds, sealing this entire bunker from the surface..."

Before Vincent could press the button, a sharp, deafening explosion echoed from deep within the subterranean complex, shaking the very foundations of the room and plunging the overhead lights into sudden, blinking darkness.
