Chapter 6 - The Architect of Shadows

The metallic clatter of heavy boots faded down the wet avenue, their receding echoes swallowed by the steady, unrelenting drone of the midnight rain.
Alara exhaled a shaky breath she hadn't realized she was holding, her arms aching from the tension of shielding the twins against her chest. Beside her, Jack didn't relax; he pressed his back harder against the damp brick wall of the warehouse, his right hand slipping instinctively back to the grip of his empty holster before remembering the gun was spent.
"If we go after Vance now, we're walking straight into a execution chamber," Alara hissed under her breath, careful not to let her voice carry past the recess of the stairs. "You're bleeding through your clothes, Jack. You can barely stand, let alone storm a syndicate stronghold."
"We aren't storming it," Jack replied, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that scraped against the silence. He shifted his weight, his teeth gritting as the movement tore at his newly opened shoulder wound. "We're going in through the foundation. Vance thinks I'm cornered. He thinks a wounded man with two infants will try to run for the state line. That's why his road blocks will be heavy, and his inner circle will be thin."
"And the babies?" Alara looked down at Stella, who shifted slightly in her sleep, her tiny hand brushing Alara’s sleeve. "We can't take them into a firefight."
Jack’s icy blue eyes locked onto hers, burning with a fierce, unwavering intensity. "I'm not leaving them behind, and neither are you. Vance wants them. They're the collateral for a fifty-million-dollar trust that he liquidated out from under my brother's estate. As long as they're with us, he has to come to us."

Alara stared at him, the horrifying scale of the conspiracy finally clicking into place. This wasn't just a turf war or a hit gone wrong. It was a coup born of greed, blood, and corporate murder.
"Fine," Alara whispered, her chin lifting with a sudden, resolute snap. "But I'm driving."
