Chapter 1 - The Voice in the Dark

The harsh glow of Naomi’s phone screen illuminated the dark shadows of the penthouse, casting an eerie blue light across the cold marble floors.
On the screen, the audio file was paused at timestamp 01:14. But I didn't need to press play to know whose voice belonged to the deep, clipped cadence humming softly in the background. It was Arthur Velez. My attorney. My fixer. The man who had held the keys to my corporate empire, my legal vulnerabilities, and my trust for a full decade.
My breath caught in my throat, hot and metallic.
“Play it,” I whispered, my voice barely audible over the distant hum of traffic rising from Lake Shore Drive.
Naomi pressed her thumb against the screen.
“...just keep him distracted with the wedding preparations for another three weeks,” Arthur’s calm, calculated voice filtered through the tiny speaker. “Once Moretti signs the amended guardianship papers transferring legal custody in the event of incapacitation, the probate court will recognize Camille as the primary caregiver. Patrick Sloane gets the logistics routes, and we dissolve the rest of the estate.”
“And the children?” Camille’s voice replied, dripping with cold indifference.
“Send them to the boarding facility in Vermont. Out of sight, out of mind. Roman won’t even know what hit him until his signature is dry on the death certificate.”
The phone screen went dark as Naomi paused the file.
The silence that followed was heavier than any physical blow I had ever taken at the docks. For ten years, I had believed that power meant controlling the streets, owning the politicians, and keeping my enemies close enough to watch them breathe. I had built a fortress of glass and steel above Lake Shore Drive to protect my children after Isabella died.
Instead, I had invited the executioners right into my nursery.
Across the wide expanse of the penthouse library, Jack stood protectively in front of his little sister Rosie, his small shoulders squared despite the terror in his eyes. Camille stood over them like a toxic specter, her manicured fingers resting casually on the back of a leather chair.
“Get into your rooms. Now,” Camille snapped at the children, her voice shifting instantly from venomous conspirator to sweet, concerned stepmother as she noticed a draft from the hallway.
Rosie sniffled, wiping her cheek with the sleeve of her pajamas, and allowed Jack to pull her away down the corridor toward the bedrooms.
Camille turned toward the dimly lit entryway, her eyes narrowing as she sensed a shift in the air. “Roman? Is that you? You’re home late.”
I didn't move from the shadows behind the marble column. My hand slowly slid back down to my side, away from the gun at my belt, remembering Naomi’s warning. She wants witnesses to see the dangerous widower attack his fiancée.

“Roman?” Camille called out again, her heels clicking sharply against the floor as she walked toward the foyer. “Why are you standing in the dark?”
