Chapter 8 - Fire in the Foyer

The concussive shockwave of the blast rattled the floorboards beneath our feet, sending a thick cloud of acrid smoke and gray drywall dust billowing down the central corridor.

“Go!” I shouted, shoving Naomi toward the children’s wing.

She didn't hesitate. She scooped Rosie up into her arms, grabbed Jack by the shoulder, and bolted down the hall just as the heavy security door at the end of the foyer began to glow a blinding, cherry-red under the intense heat of a thermal torch applied by the men outside.

Arthur tried to crawl toward the smoke, howling for help, but I grabbed him by his ruined silk collar and dragged him backward into the shadows behind the marble pillar, out of the direct line of fire.

“Stay right there, Arthur,” I whispered in his ear. “You wanted to see how the syndicate handles domestic disputes. Don't blink.”

Screeech—bang!

The reinforced security door gave way, crashing inward with a sickening metallic shriek.

Through the thick, roiling smoke, four massive silhouettes emerged into the foyer. They weren't clumsy street thugs; they moved with the synchronized, predatory discipline of military mercenaries, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the room with laser sights that painted the walls in glowing red dots.

“Clear!” the lead operative barked through his digital voice modulator.

The red dot of his laser swept across the marble floor, stopping right over Arthur’s trembling shoes.

“Target identified,” the operative muttered, raising his rifle barrel toward Arthur’s head. “Order was termination for all compromised assets.”

Before his finger could tighten on the trigger, I stepped out from behind the marble column, my Sig Sauer raised and locked with absolute, icy precision.

Crack!

The heavy gunshot roared inside the enclosed penthouse like thunder.
