Chapter 7 - The Federal Warrant

The crisp night air rushed into the climate-controlled marquee, carrying the scent of damp pavement and flashing red-and-blue cruiser lights that painted the glass walls in frantic, rhythmic strokes. Three armed federal marshals strode briskly down the central carpeted aisle, their heavy boots thudding against the floorboards. Leading them was a tall, sharp-featured woman in a charcoal trench coat with an FBI shield pinned sharply to her lapel—Special Agent Vance.

Gasps rippled through the gathered wedding guests as the marshals fanned out, securing the exits. The festive, high-society illusion of the evening shattered completely.

My mother let out a shrill scream and collapsed into Aunt Marlene’s arms, while Lucas gripped the edge of the stage, his knuckles turning white.

Agent Vance walked straight past the terrified crowd, ignoring the whispering socialites, and stopped dead at the foot of the stage, looking up directly at my father.

"Arthur Miller?" Agent Vance asked, her voice clipped and professional.

My father swallowed hard, his voice shaking as he forced himself upright. "I—I am Arthur Miller. What is the meaning of this? This is a private event! My son's wedding—"

"Your son's wedding is over, Mr. Miller," Vance interrupted, pulling a thick packet of documents from her trench coat. "You are being placed under federal arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy to obstruct a federal investigation into the Hale-Miller patent thefts."

The word thefts dropped like a bomb inside the tent.

Lucas spun around, staring wildly at his father. "Dad? What is she talking about? What did you do?"

My father didn't answer. He looked past Agent Vance, his frantic eyes locking onto Alexander with a mixture of raw terror and blinding hatred. "You did this," my father hissed, pointing a trembling finger at Alexander. "You orchestrated this entire thing! You trapped me!"

"I didn't trap you, Arthur," Alexander replied smoothly, his voice entirely level. "You spent thirty years embezzling funds from subsidiary accounts and laundering them through shell companies to hide the assets you stole from my family. All I did was hand the ledger to the people who were already looking for it."

Agent Vance stepped forward, signaling two marshals who flanked my father immediately, their hands resting on their holstered sidearms. "Mr. Miller, turn around and interlace your fingers behind your back. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As the heavy steel handcuffs clicked around my father’s wrists, the reality of the moment washed over me. The man who had terrorized my childhood, belittled my existence, and treated my life like a disposable asset was being led out of his own son's wedding in disgrace, his head bowed, surrounded by federal agents.

My mother was wailing hysterically now, screaming my name across the tent, begging me to do something, to use Alexander’s influence to save them. But I didn't move. I stood beside my husband, my hand resting securely in his, watching the empire built on cruelty crumble into dust.

Agent Vance turned to leave, but before she reached the exit, her eyes swept over Alexander and me. She paused for a fraction of a second, offering Alexander a subtle, knowing nod before guiding my handcuffed father out into the flashing lights of the patrol cars.

The marquee descended into a profound, suffocating silence.

Chloe ripped the white veil from her hair, threw it onto the floor, and stormed out through the side exit without uttering a single word to Lucas.

Lucas stood alone on the stage, abandoned by his bride, his father arrested, and his family name destroyed, staring out at the empty room with hollow, uncomprehending eyes.

Alexander looked down at me, his expression softening as he brushed a stray lock of dark hair behind my ear.

"Come on, love," he whispered softly. "Let's go home."
