Chapter 3 - The Frozen Vault

The silence that followed my words was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop on the linoleum floor.
Evan stared at me, his eyes wide and bloodshot, struggling to process the impossible reality shifting beneath his feet. For seven years, he had worn the crown of a self-made business tycoon, basking in the applause of chamber of commerce dinners and industry magazines, completely insulated by his parents' arrogance and my deliberate invisibility.
"You... you set this up," Evan whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and blind rage. He lunged forward again, straining against the security guards until his face turned purple. "You lying bitch! You planned this!"
"I planned for my survival, Evan," I replied evenly, my voice as steady as a surgeon's blade. "When you picked up that wooden cane three nights ago, you made a tactical miscalculation. You assumed that because I was on the floor, I was finished. You forgot that a true commander never goes into battle without a secondary contingency plan."
James Vance didn't waste a second. He walked past the struggling security guards, walked straight up to Evan, and shoved a thick manila envelope directly into his chest.
"Here are your preliminary injunction papers, Mr. Mercer," James announced formally. "All company credit cards issued in your name have been deactivated as of nine o'clock this morning. The corporate fleet fuel cards are locked. And the primary operating accounts at First National have been frozen under suspicion of multi-million-dollar wire fraud."
Diane let out a sharp, theatrical shriek and staggered backward against the hospital wall, her designer handbag slipping from her fingers and spilling its contents across the floor. "Fraud?! How dare you! We built this empire! We took your little investment and turned it into a powerhouse!"
"You took my inheritance, laundered three point eight million dollars through shell companies registered in the Caymans under Richard’s name, and thought I wouldn't notice because I was too busy managing the warehouse logistics," I said, my voice hardening into steel. I reached into the pocket of my hospital gown and pulled out a small, encrypted USB flash drive, holding it up where they could all see it. "And just in case you think you can delete your digital footprint, Richard, this little drive contains every wire transfer receipt, every forged signature, and every secret ledger entry from the last four years."
Richard’s face went chalk white. He didn't yell. He didn't threaten. He simply reached out and grabbed the edge of the doorframe for support, his knees visibly buckling beneath him.
"Where... where did you get that?" Richard rasped, his voice sounding like dry leaves scraping across concrete.
"The smoke detector in the foyer," I said sweetly. "It records in 4K with crystal-clear audio. It captured every single word of your little financial conspiracy meetings in the kitchen... and every crunch of the cane when Evan broke my leg."
Evan stopped fighting the guards entirely. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking hollowed out, like a marionette whose strings had suddenly been cut.

"You recorded us?" Evan breathed, staring at me as if I were a monster he had never seen before.
"No, Evan," I said, leaning back against my pillows as Dr. Marcus motioned for the guards to drag them toward the door. "You recorded yourselves."
