Chapter 4 - The Eviction Notice

The security guards didn't wait for Evan to recover his senses. With swift, professional efficiency, they hauled both Evan and Richard backward out of Ward 4B, their loafers squeaking frantically against the polished hospital floor. Diane scrambled after them, scooping up her scattered lipstick and compact with claw-like fingers while shrieking obscenities back into the room.

The heavy oak door slammed shut, sealing off the hallway chaos and plunging the private suite into a profound, heavy quiet.

Dr. Marcus let out a long breath, adjusting his stethoscope around his neck. "Well, that certainly beats the usual morning rounds. How are the vitals, Claire?"

"I've survived worse, Doctor," I said, managing a genuine, if tired, smile.

James Vance snapped his briefcase shut, tucking it neatly beneath his arm. "The injunctions are officially locked in with the superior court judge, Claire. By noon today, federal marshals will execute the asset seizure warrants at the Mercer residence and the company headquarters on Industrial Parkway. Your husband won't even be able to buy a cup of coffee with corporate funds."

"Good," I said, my eyes fixed on the winter sunlight outside the window. "Make sure they lock the master bedroom suite first. I want all my personal property from the safe inventoried before his mother has a chance to rifle through my jewelry box."

"Consider it done," James said, offering a crisp, respectful nod before turning and exiting the room, leaving Dr. Marcus and me alone.

The doctor walked over to the side of the bed, checking the chart hanging at the foot of the mattress. "You realize this is only the beginning, right? Once the criminal indictments drop for the embezzlement and the aggravated assault, your husband is facing serious federal time. Your marriage is legally dead, and the media circus is going to be brutal."

"Let them talk," I replied, my voice hard and resolute. "For seven years, I let them build a myth around Evan’s name while I did the heavy lifting in the shadows. I spent years apologizing for my own ambition just to keep the peace in a family of parasites. That woman I was three days ago—the one who let them walk all over her—died on those staircase steps."

Dr. Marcus looked down at my cast, a flicker of profound respect crossing his eyes. "You’ve got ice water in your veins, Claire. Most people would have panicked."

"Panic is a luxury for people who don't have contingency plans," I said quietly.

Just as the doctor turned to leave, my bedside phone began to ring. It wasn't the hospital intercom, but the secure, direct-line mobile device I kept hidden beneath my mattress—the one connected exclusively to my warehouse operations manager, Tom.

I waited until the door clicked shut behind Dr. Marcus, then slid the phone out from beneath the pillow and pressed accept.

"Tom," I said. "Report."

Tom’s voice came through the speaker, tight, breathless, and laced with frantic urgency. "Boss, you need to turn on the local news right now. Federal marshals just raided the corporate headquarters on Industrial Parkway... but that's not the worst part."

I sat up straight, my heart skipping a beat. "What happened?"

"They opened the main executive safe in your husband's private office," Tom said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "And they didn't just find the missing company ledgers. They found something else—something with your name on it, dated six months before you and Evan even met."
