Chapter 3 - Grounded in Paradise

The private villa at the Ritz-Carlton in Grand Cayman was supposed to be a sanctuary of white sand, turquoise water, and absolute immunity from the drab realities of Boston.
Instead, it was a war zone.
Nathan Mercer stood in the center of the air-conditioned master suite, his phone glued to his ear, his face slick with sweat despite the heavy sea breeze blowing off the balcony. The silk button-down shirt I had bought him for our anniversary—the one he claimed was ruined by a biological spill in the O.R.—was rumpled and unbuttoned at the collar.
“What do you mean, insufficient funds?!” Nathan roared into the receiver, his voice cracking with panic. “Check the corporate ledger again! That account is tied directly to the primary hospital receivables line! There should be at least two hundred thousand dollars liquid!”
On the other side of the king-sized bed, Chloe Sterling was furiously tapping away on her smartphone, her manicured fingers flying across the screen as text message after text message flashed red with transaction decline alerts.
“Nathan, my corporate Amex just got flagged,” Chloe called out, her voice pitching upward in distress. “The front desk downstairs says our room deposit didn't clear. They’re asking for a secondary form of payment or threatening to lock out our keys.”
Through the open door connecting to the adjoining suite, Diane Mercer poked her head in, her designer sunglasses pushed up onto her forehead, her expression pinched with irritation.
“Nathan, darling, what is going on?” Diane demanded, sweeping into the room in a billowing linen resort dress. “Brooke tried to book a catamaran tour for the children this afternoon, and her credit card was declined at the marina. People are staring! It’s deeply embarrassing.”
“Mom, just give me five minutes!” Nathan snapped, pacing across the imported marble floor. He pressed the phone tighter against his ear. “Yes, I am Dr. Nathan Mercer! I am the head of orthopedic surgery at—what do you mean the account has been frozen by a court-ordered administrative injunction?! On whose authority?!”
A heavy pause hung in the room. Even the children had stopped running around outside on the terrace, sensing the sudden, sharp shift in the tropical air.
“What do you mean, Mrs. Evelyn Mercer?” Nathan’s voice dropped to a choked whisper, the color draining entirely from his sun-kissed skin. “She’s... she’s at home. She doesn't have access to the master corporate portal. That’s restricted to senior partners!”
Another pause. Then the line clicked dead with a sharp, electronic tone.
Nathan lowered the phone slowly from his ear, his hand trembling so violently he nearly dropped the device onto the floor.
“What did they say?” Chloe demanded, standing up from the bed and marching over to him, her face flushed with anger. “Nathan, what is going on? Who is Evelyn? You told me she was just some meek, boring housewife who stayed home and paid the utility bills while you worked!”
Before Nathan could answer, his sister Brooke burst into the room, her phone flashing a bank notification alert.
“Nathan! All my debit cards just got locked! My boutique account is frozen, and the mortgage automatic payment for my house just bounced!” Brooke shrieked, tears springing to her eyes. “How are we supposed to get home? Our return flights were booked under your corporate travel account!”
Nathan looked around the room—at his mother, whose face had gone chalk-white beneath her expensive makeup; at Chloe, who was glaring at him as if he had just transformed into a stranger; at his sister, who was hyperventilating by the doorway.
For the first time in ten years, Nathan realized that the world he lived in hadn't been built by his own hands. It had been sustained, protected, and quietly funded by the woman he had abandoned at an airport terminal three thousand miles away.

“Pack the bags,” Nathan said, his voice hollow and defeated. “We’re going back to Boston.”
