Chapter 5 - The Homecoming

The front door burst open with a resounding crash against the interior drywall.
Nathan stood in the entryway, his hair disheveled, his expensive travel jacket stained with coffee, and his face dark with a mixture of terror and blind fury. Behind him stood Chloe, looking shell-shocked and clutching her designer handbag like a shield, while Diane and Brooke hovered on the porch behind them, pale and muttering in panic.
“Evelyn!” Nathan roared, storming down the hallway toward the kitchen like a tidal wave. “What the hell have you done?! Do you have any idea what kind of mess—?”
He stopped dead in his tracks as he rounded the corner into the kitchen and saw Detective Miller and the uniformed officer standing by the dining table with an open warrant portfolio.
Nathan’s jaw worked soundlessly for a second, his eyes darting from the police badges to me, sitting calmly at the kitchen island with my glass of water.
“Detective... what is the meaning of this?” Nathan stammered, trying desperately to regain his authoritative bedside manner, though his voice shook violently. “This is a private residence! What are you doing in my house?”
“Your house, Nathan?” I asked softly, setting my glass down on the marble counter.
Nathan whipped his head around, glaring at me with pure venom. “You did this. You froze the accounts! You called the police! Have you lost your absolute mind, Evelyn?! You’ve ruined everything—our practice, our reputation, our family!”
“Our family?” I repeated, standing up slowly from the stool. I buttoned the cuffs of my silk blouse, my posture tall and unyielding. “Nathan, the only family you care about is standing out on that porch hoping I wouldn't notice they’ve been living off my intellectual property and my credit rating for a decade.”
“Dr. Mercer,” Detective Miller interrupted, stepping smoothly between us and flashing his badge directly into Nathan’s face. “You are being formally detained for questioning regarding corporate embezzlement, healthcare compliance fraud, and illicit kickback schemes involving Mercer Medical Partners. You have the right to remain silent—”
“This is insane! I’m a surgeon! I save lives!” Nathan shouted, backing away toward the kitchen island as the uniformed officer stepped forward to secure his wrists in plastic zip-ties. “Evelyn, tell them! Tell them this is a domestic dispute! We can work this out! We can go home, just—just drop the charges!”
Chloe let out a sharp, hysterical sob from the doorway, turning on her heel and sprinting back down the driveway toward a waiting taxi, abandoning Nathan to his fate without a backward glance.
Diane pressed her hands against her face, weeping loudly on the front porch as Brooke tried to comfort her, realizing for the first time that there was no money left to bail them out.
Nathan stared at me as the officer pulled his arms behind his back, his eyes wide, pleading, and utterly pathetic.
“You’ll destroy everything we built, Evelyn,” Nathan whispered, his voice cracking with desperation as they led him toward the front door. “You won't survive without me.”
I walked slowly down the hallway behind them, standing in the open doorway to watch the cool spring wind blow across the lawn.
“Nathan,” I said quietly, stopping him just as they guided him toward the back of the police cruiser.
He turned his head back, hope flickering briefly in his bloodshot eyes.

“I didn't destroy what we built,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “I just stopped pretending you built it.”
Detective Miller nudged Nathan forward, sliding him into the back seat of the cruiser. The heavy doors slammed shut with a definitive, metallic thud, and the cruiser’s red and blue lights began to flash against the dark Boston night.
