Chapter 9 - The Siege at Dawn

The second explosion tore through the reinforced iron gates at the front of the estate, sending a shockwave that rattled the windows of the hidden office and knocked a row of heavy books off the shelves.
Gunfire—sharp, automatic, and relentless—popped through the night air like strings of heavy firecrackers.
“Stay behind me,” Alessandro commanded instantly, his voice dropping into the cold, lethal tone of a warlord taking command of a battlefield.
Before I could process what was happening, Alessandro grabbed my arm, yanking me out of the hidden office and through the dark library toward the reinforced panic room behind the master suite. Alarms wailed through the mansion, flashing strobe lights painting the hallways in frantic crimson hues.
“Who is it?!” I screamed over the deafening roar of a rocket-propelled grenade hitting the exterior stone wall near the courtyard.
“The Bratva,” Alessandro snarled, unbuttoning his holster under his arm and drawing a heavy, suppressed Sig Sauer pistol with practiced, terrifying ease. “Nikolai’s men. They think my focus on corporate restructuring has left my perimeter soft.”
He shoved me inside the steel-reinforced panic room, pushing me behind a massive oak console lined with monitors showing live security feeds from every corner of the estate. On screen one, three black armored vans had breached the front gates, disgorging a dozen heavily armed men in tactical gear who were systematically advancing toward the main foyer.
“Alessandro, you can't go back out there!” I cried, grabbing the sleeve of his shirt as he turned to step back into the hallway. “There are too many of them!”
He stopped, looking down at my hand clutching his fabric. For a fraction of a second, his hard, unyielding expression softened. He raised his free hand, cupping the back of my neck and pulling me forward until his forehead rested against mine.
“Listen to me, Elizabeth,” he whispered fiercely, his breath warm against my skin. “If anything happens to me, the secondary safe in this room contains bearer bonds, passports under your real name, and enough capital to get you out of the country before sunrise. Mrs. Gable knows the route through the service tunnel.”
“I don't want a passport!” I sobbed, panic tearing through my chest with blinding force. “I want you to stay alive!”
A savage, humorless smile touched his lips. “Good. Then give me a reason to come back.”
He pulled away before I could grab him again, stepped out into the hallway, and slammed the steel vault door shut, locking it from the outside.
The heavy thud of the locking mechanism echoed like a tomb door closing.
I threw myself against the steel door, pounding my fists against the metal. “Alessandro! Open the door! Alessandro!”
Monitors flickered on the console before me. On screen four, I watched him move through the hallway with terrifying, lethal grace—a shadow slipping through the crimson strobe lights, his pistol raised, hunting the men who had dared to bring war to his doorstep.
Gunfire erupted just outside the master suite. Shouts, shattering glass, and the dull thud of bodies hitting the hardwood floor echoed through the hidden audio feeds.
I pressed my hands against my mouth, tears streaming down my face as I watched the camera feeds blink out one by one as explosives took out the hallway routers.
Suddenly, the screen showing the panic room corridor flickered back to life.
Two heavily armed men in black tactical gear—foreign mercenaries bearing the wolf tattoo of the Bratva on their necks—blasted the wall panel beside the panic room vault with a thermal charge.
The steel door hissed, smoking heavily around the edges.

They were trying to burn their way inside.
