Chapter 10 - The Dawn of a New Empire

The sun rose over the Newport cliffs on Sunday morning, painting the Atlantic ocean in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and deep jade green.

I stood on the master balcony of the estate, wrapped in a silk robe, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. The crisp morning air filled my lungs, clean and sharp, carrying no weight of the past, no shadows of what used to be.

Inside the suite, I could hear the muffled giggles of Leo, Sam, and Maya as they chased each other around the king-sized bed, arguing over who got the biggest stack of chocolate-chip pancakes Mrs. Gable had prepared for breakfast.

They were safe. They were loved. And they were entirely free.

The heavy oak door of the master bedroom clicked open, and Arthur Vance stepped out onto the balcony, holding a fresh tablet displaying the morning financial tickers.

“Market opens in two hours, Madam Chairwoman,” Arthur said, a rare, genuine smile touching his weathered face. “Futures for Lane-Vance Energy are already up twelve percent in pre-trading over in London. The board is fully consolidated, and your legal team just cleared the final patent transfers.”

“Good,” I said, taking a slow sip of my coffee, watching the waves crash against the rocks far below. “Let’s make sure the restructuring announcement goes live right at nine. I want the market to know who is really running Chicago.”

Arthur chuckled, leaning against the stone balustrade beside me. “You know, five years ago, when you walked into my office asking for a seed loan with nothing but a folder of algorithms and a fire in your eyes, I thought you were just another ambitious kid with a dream.”

“And what do you think now, Arthur?” I asked, turning my head to look at him with a calm, absolute smile.

“I think,” Arthur murmured, raising his coffee mug in a quiet salute toward the rising sun, “that the Sterling family had no idea what kind of storm they invited into their house.”

My phone buzzed on the glass table behind us. A new notification popped up—not a frantic text from Liam, not a legal threat from a disgraced executive, but a quiet, secure calendar invite from the governor’s office regarding the state’s new green-energy infrastructure initiative, addressed directly to Gina Lane, Chief Executive Officer.

I didn't even look back at the phone. I turned back toward the bright, chaotic laughter of my children echoing from inside the room, ready to step into the rest of our lives.
