Chapter 8 - The West Wing Strategy

The west wing library of the Sterling estate—now legally the property of Lane Global Holdings—smelled of old leather, spilled scotch, and panic.
Only a handful of high-ranking executives had dared to stay for Arthur Vance’s emergency meeting. They sat around the mahogany conference table, sweating through their expensive suits, watching me as I took the head chair—the exact chair Liam’s father had occupied for thirty years.
Arthur stood beside me, flipping through a tablet loaded with financial spreadsheets.
“As you can see from the preliminary audit,” Arthur addressed the room, his voice calm and authoritative, “Victoria Sterling’s unauthorized fund transfers have left the company with a temporary fifty-million-dollar liquidity deficit. However, thanks to the asset restructuring engineered by our primary stakeholder, Lane Global will inject the necessary capital by midnight, contingent upon one condition.”
An executive in the back raised a trembling hand. “What... what condition, Mr. Vance?”
“Every executive board member who signed off on Victoria’s fraudulent audits tenders their resignation, effective immediately,” Arthur said smoothly.
Instantly, pens began scratching across resignation letters across the table. They didn't even hesitate. Survival in the corporate world was a ruthless game, and loyalty to the Sterlings had just become a ticket to a federal penitentiary.
When the meeting adjourned twenty minutes later, the executives scrambled out of the room like rats fleeing a sinking ship, leaving only Arthur, myself, and the triplets, who were quietly drawing pictures on the back of financial prospectuses with a box of crayons Arthur had wisely produced from his briefcase.
“You handled that like a veteran titan, Gina,” Arthur said with a warm, approving smile, pouring two glasses of scotch from the mahogany bar. He handed one to me, though I only took it to hold the cool crystal against my fingers. “The board is yours. Sterling Enterprises is yours. What’s the next move?”
“We restructure the entire portfolio,” I said, staring down at the crayon drawing Maya had handed me—a picture of a green monster eating a tuxedo. “We spin off the outdated real estate holdings, pivot the R&D division entirely toward clean energy infrastructure, and strip the Sterling name from the corporate charter.”
Arthur raised his glass in a silent toast. “Consider it done. By Monday morning, it won't even be called Sterling Enterprises anymore. It will officially be Lane-Vance Energy.”
My phone buzzed vibrating loudly against the mahogany table.
I picked it up. An unknown caller ID flashed across the screen, followed by a text message from a local Newport police precinct:
Police Dispatch: "Mr. Liam Sterling has been detained following an altercation outside the estate gates. He is asking to make his one phone call to you."
I stared at the screen, watching the digital numbers blink.
“Trouble?” Arthur asked, noticing the shift in my posture.
May you like
“No,” I said quietly, locking the screen and sliding the phone back into my designer clutch. “Just a loose end.”
