Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Parking Lot

The diner booth was cramped, smelling of stale grease and brewed coffee, but the anonymous hum of the place offered a strange kind of sanctuary.

Zachary slid a ceramic mug of black coffee across the sticky laminate table toward me. He hadn't asked any probing questions since we sat down, allowing the shock of the afternoon to settle into silence.

“You saved my daughter’s life today,” Zachary said softly, wrapping his hands around his own mug. “If you hadn't stayed at that table... if you had walked out of the OR to make it to that altar on time... Paisley wouldn’t have made it. The surgeon on call before you missed the internal laceration entirely.”

I looked down at my hands. The surgical scrub burns on my knuckles were still faintly visible beneath a light layer of soap. “That’s what Andrew couldn't forgive. You’re always saving someone. That’s what he said to me.”

“He’s an idiot,” Zachary stated flatly, without a trace of hesitation.

A faint, bitter smile touched my lips. “He was my fiancé for two years. We bought a house together in Alamo Heights. I spent every weekend helping him build his architectural firm, putting my own savings into his startup accounts so he could get off the ground.”

“And while you were saving lives, he was planning a wedding with your best friend?” Zachary’s eyes narrowed, a sharp, dangerous intelligence flashing behind them. “People don't just pivot from marrying one woman to marrying her best friend in three hours, Doctor. That kind of betrayal takes planning.”

The words hit me like a splash of cold water.

I sat up straight, the fog of exhaustion suddenly clearing from my mind. Planning.

Gemma hadn't just happened to be at the wedding dressed as a bride. She wasn't wearing a borrowed dress. That gown—fitted, beaded, custom-tailored—took months of alterations. The caterers, the guests, the tequila, the monogrammed napkins bearing the initials A&G instead of A&S.

“Oh, God,” I breathed, the coffee cup shaking in my hand. “It wasn't a backup plan. It was never my wedding.”

Before Zachary could press further, my phone buzzed violently on the table. Caller ID flashed a name I never expected to see again: Gemma.
