Chapter 6 - The Emergency Injunction

The crisp rustle of heavy cardstock breaking the silence of the thirty-second-floor office sounded like a gunshot in the confined space.

Judge Sterling—a lean, silver-haired magistrate whose presence commanded immediate, suffocating obedience—stepped fully into the light, holding the open legal portfolio in his left hand. His stern eyes swept past Andrew Foster’s pale, sweat-slicked face and landed squarely on Gemma, who was still clutching her glass of wine so tightly her knuckles had turned bone-white.

“Mr. Andrew Foster,” the judge’s voice rolled through the glass-walled suite with terrifying calm. “By the power vested in the Bexar County civil and municipal court, this bench has issued an immediate, irrevocable asset freeze on all accounts, holdings, and digital sub-ledgers associated with Foster Architecture LLC, effective twenty-four seconds ago.”

Andrew’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. He looked wildly from the judge to the two armed security guards blocking the exit, then back to the laptop screen where the bank transfer progress bar was frozen at ninety-eight percent.

“You—you can’t do this!” Andrew finally stammered, his voice cracking with panic as he stepped around the mahogany desk. “This is a private corporate entity! She signed over operational control three months ago! We have a signed operating agreement!”

“An operating agreement executed under fraudulent pretenses, backed by forged marital disclosure waivers and unauthorized fund diversions, is not a legal shield, Mr. Foster,” Zachary Howard stepped forward, his height and cold, unyielding glare instantly shrinking Andrew back a step. Zachary’s voice was smooth as polished glass, carrying the crushing weight of a man accustomed to destroying adversaries in boardrooms and courtrooms alike. “Especially when those funds were traced directly from Dr. Samantha Miller’s personal inheritance account—an account she never legally surrendered.”

Gemma finally found her voice, though it shook violently. “Samantha, please! You’re making a huge mistake! We were going to pay you back! It was just a temporary corporate adjustment—”

I didn't look at her. I didn't feel rage, or betrayal, or even satisfaction. I felt an absolute, pristine clarity. The woman who had spent two years apologizing for working late, the woman who had let herself be belittled by Brenda and manipulated by Andrew, felt as distant as a character in a book I had read years ago.

“Gemma,” I said softly, my voice cutting through her panicked excuses like a scalpel. “You wore my wedding dress to a wedding I was paying for while I was saving a child’s life. Save your breath. You’ll need it for your deposition.”

Before Andrew could lunge toward the computer to close the browser, one of the security guards stepped forward, clamping a heavy hand onto his shoulder and pressing him back into his chair.

“Don't touch that keyboard, son,” the guard murmured. “Unless you want federal obstruction added to your state fraud charges.”

Across the desk, the laptop screen blinked. A bright red error banner flashed across the bank portal: Account Frozen. IP Address Flagged for Forensic Audit.
