Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

The silence in the boardroom was absolute, heavy enough to crush bone.

Vanessa’s face went chalk-white. She looked from Thomas Vance to me, and finally toward Daniel, expecting her fiancé to step in and rescue her with one of his trademark charismatic defenses.

Daniel didn't move. He stood frozen by the table, staring at me as if he were seeing a ghost.

“You can’t do that,” Vanessa stammered, her voice losing its polished corporate edge, fracturing into panic. “The board approved my appointment! We signed contracts! This is a hostile takeover!”

“It’s not a takeover, Ms. Cole,” Thomas Vance said smoothly, sliding a thick financial audit report across the table toward her. “It’s an intervention. Our forensic accountants have been reviewing the last eighteen months of Whitmore Dynamics’ international expansion budgets. It appears that a significant portion of the R&D capital allocated for the European subsidiary was quietly funneled into private shell accounts registered in the British Virgin Islands under an entity called Veloce Holdings.”

Vanessa’s breath hitched. She looked down at the document as though it were radioactive.

“I don't know what you're talking about,” she muttered, her hands shaking slightly.

“Veloce Holdings is registered to a P.O. Box in Zurich,” I continued, my voice entirely level. “And the primary signatory on those accounts isn't Daniel. It’s you, Vanessa. You systematically diverted over fourteen million dollars of company capital into a private slush fund while reporting false deficit numbers to the board to justify emergency loans.”

Daniel slowly turned his head toward Vanessa, his eyes narrowing in sudden, terrifying realization. “You what?”

“Daniel, don't listen to her, she’s lying—!” Vanessa panicked, reaching out to grab his arm, but Daniel violently pulled away from her touch.

“Is this true?” Daniel demanded, his voice rising, the polished facade finally shattering completely. “You embezzled from the European expansion fund?”

“I was securing our future!” Vanessa shouted back, dropping all pretenses of corporate professionalism. “You were too weak to push the board for higher equity distribution, so I had to make sure we had our own cushion when we took the company public!”

I watched them tear into each other with a cold, detached satisfaction. The illusion of their brilliant partnership was dissolving into mutual recrimination in less than sixty seconds.

“Mr. Vance,” I said quietly, standing up from my chair. “Have security escort Ms. Cole off the premises and notify the federal prosecutor’s office that we are turning over the financial audit immediately.”

“Right away, Claire,” Thomas replied.

As two building security guards stepped into the boardroom, I turned my attention back to Daniel, who stood alone in the center of the room, completely broken.

“And Daniel?” I said softly.

He looked up at me, his eyes hollow, defeated.

“Clean out your desk,” I told him. “You have one hour before I change the locks on the penthouse.”
