Chapter 6 - The Phantom Portfolio

“Say that again, Sarah,” I commanded, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp register that froze the air in my lungs. “What collateral agreement?”

“The—the private equity firm is called Meridian Trust,” Sarah stammered on the line, the sound of frantic paper-shuffling bleeding through her microphone. “Mr. Anderson used your personal inheritance portfolio—the shares your father left in the independent trust—as a personal guarantee for a massive bridge loan to cover losses from his private real estate speculations. The default deadline is midnight tonight. If the wire isn't confirmed by twelve, Meridian exercises its option to seize the trust's underlying assets, including the estate on Long Island.”

My hand gripped the edge of the mahogany desk so tightly my knuckles turned chalk-white.

Daniel hadn’t just betrayed me emotionally; he had actively forged my digital signature on restricted trust documents while I was asleep in our penthouse, treating my father’s lifetime legacy as his own personal casino collateral.

“Sarah,” I said, keeping my tone deadly calm. “Are the physical copies of those signed agreements still in the active archive room on the fourteenth floor?”

“Yes,” she whispered. “Mr. Anderson kept them locked in a secure filing cabinet under a double-encrypted biometric lock. But only his master keycard or—or an executive override can open it.”

“Stay at your desk, Sarah. Don't speak to anyone, and don't let anyone near your terminal,” I ordered. “I’m coming down.”

I stood up so fast my office chair rolled back and crashed against the glass wall. I grabbed my leather folio, marched out of the corner office, and hit the private elevator button with enough force to crack the plastic panel.

Daniel thought he had cornered me. He thought that even if he lost the company, he could strip me of my inheritance and leave me with nothing while he skipped town with Vanessa’s stolen millions.

The digital floor indicator dropped rapidly: 42... 30... 20... 15...

As the elevator doors slid open with a soft chime on the fourteenth floor, I stepped out into the dimly lit archive wing, only to find the heavy steel fire door propped open—and Daniel standing inside the records bay, frantically stuffing files into a leather briefcase.
