Chapter 10 - The Secret File

“Move! Now!” Dominic yelled over the deafening roar of automatic weapons fire, grabbing the handles of the gurney and sprinting down the final stretch of the loading dock corridor.

I scrambled up from the floor, dragging the spare oxygen tank and pushing with all my strength to help him wheel Maya past the heavy swing doors.

The roar of the city outside hit us instantly as the massive steel loading bay doors of bay four cranked open automatically, triggered by Dominic’s remote fob. Rain was pouring down in sheets, blurring the glowing red taillights of an unmarked black SUV idling in the berth.

Dominic shoved the gurney into the back of the spacious, reinforced cargo hold, locking the safety clamps into place with practiced speed. He threw Sterling into the passenger seat and yanked me up into the back alongside Maya.

“Hold on!” he roared, slamming the rear cargo doors shut just as three armed men in black tactical gear rounded the corner of the loading dock, their rifles raised.

The SUV’s tires screamed against the wet concrete, burning rubber as Dominic whipped the steering wheel hard, smashing through the security gate and launching us out into the rain-slicked Chicago street.

Bullets pinged harmlessly off the reinforced rear glass, fading into the distance as we accelerated into the grey afternoon traffic.

Inside the dim cargo hold, Maya gave a sudden, sharp gasp, her eyes fluttering open for a fraction of a second as she coughed up a final spray of water.

I dropped beside her, pressing my fingers to her wrist to check her pulse, completely ignoring the adrenaline still surging through my veins.

Then, my phone—which had been clattering against the metal floor during the shootout—buzzed violently.

I picked it up. It wasn't a text from Jeffrey. It wasn't a call from my mother.

It was an automatic cloud-sync notification from my hospital email account, opening a hidden directory that Jeffrey had accidentally left linked to my shared family login.

The file name flashed across the screen in bold letters:

MORETTI_LOGISTICS_OFFSHORE_PAYROLL_FINAL_DRAFT.pdf

And right beneath it, listed as the primary beneficiary of the multi-million-dollar illicit shell company funded by the stolen pediatric grants, was a name I never expected to see:

May you like

Dr. Robert Miller.

My own father.
