Chapter 6 - The Weight of a Warning

The sharp metallic scrape of security boots sliding against the linoleum floor echoed off the tiled walls of Trauma Room 3. Arthur Sterling was still thrashing against the two guards, his fingers clawing desperately toward the gurney where his daughter lay motionless under the harsh surgical lights.
“Let me go! You don’t know what’s out there!” Sterling’s voice cracked, a ragged, animalistic sound that tore through the sterile hum of the heart monitor. “They’re watching every floor! If you keep her here, they’ll finish it inside the hospital!”
Dr. Vance stepped squarely into Sterling’s line of sight, his face carved from stone. “Mr. Sterling, your daughter is in critical condition. She has severe hypothermia, water in her lungs, and internal trauma. If you don't shut your mouth and let us work, she won't survive the next ten minutes, regardless of who is outside!”
Sterling froze. The wild, manic panic in his bloodshot eyes flickered into a hollow, crushing despair. His knees buckled under him, and the two security guards had to take his weight to keep him from collapsing completely onto the shattered medical trays.
I turned my back to them, forcing my hands to stop shaking as I checked the IV line pumping saline into Maya’s bruised arm. My mind was racing back to the restaurant, to Jeffrey’s embezzlement audit notice, and to the corporate shipping accounts that had somehow linked my own brother’s fraudulent loans to Arthur Sterling’s logistics network. It was all connected. The money, the grant funds, the river docks, and now a child pulled from the freezing water with diesel-stained clothes.
“Barbara,” Dr. Vance whispered, stepping close to my shoulder while keeping one eye on the struggling corporate director. “Her oxygen saturation is dropping again. Get the intubation tray ready. Now.”
Before I could reach for the metal cart, the hospital’s primary overhead public address system clicked. A harsh, electronic tone buzzed twice.
“Code Silver, West Wing Pediatric Ward. Code Silver. All staff lock down secure areas immediately.”
