Chapter 10 - The Knock on the Glass

The video continued to play, Jonathan’s voice detailing the exact Swiss bank accounts, offshore routing codes, and names of every co-conspirator involved in the conspiracy. But as the file reached its final minutes, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from outside the frosted glass window of Detective Miller’s office.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

I stopped breathing. Miller’s hand instantly dropped to the service weapon at his hip, his eyes darting toward the hallway door.

Before either of us could move, the overhead fluorescent lights in the precinct flickered violently twice and died, plunging the entire floor into a heavy, emergency-red backup glow. Down the hallway, a sudden, synchronized chorus of automated fire alarms began to wail, accompanied by the heavy slam of secure fire doors dropping into place across the building.

“They tracked the ping,” Miller hissed, drawing his pistol and stepping in front of my chair. “The moment we unlocked that drive, their firewall flagged our IP address.”

“How did they find us this fast?” I asked, standing up from my chair, my fingers gripping the edge of the desk as I stared at the dark hallway.

“Because they didn't just track the terminal,” Miller said grimly, his radio squawking with unintelligible static from frantic dispatchers out front. “They’re already inside the building.”
