Chapter 9 - Opening the Vault

Detective Miller cleared his throat, turned his secure, air-gapped terminal around, and carefully extracted the flash drive from the evidence bag, sliding it into the USB port.

A stark command-line interface blinked on the monitor. A password prompt appeared in glowing green text: ENTER RECOVERY KEY OR BIOMETRIC AUTHORIZATION.

I reached out, placed my right index finger against the biometric scanner pad attached to the terminal, and whispered Jonathan’s birthday into the quiet room.

Access Granted.

A cascading waterfall of files instantly populated the screen—thousands of encrypted PDF documents, recorded phone conversations, bank routing numbers, and internal corporate emails bearing the digital signatures of high-ranking executives, including my father, Arthur Hayes.

My breath hitched. My father wasn't just a minor beneficiary of a shell company; he was an active corporate director on the board of Veloce Holdings, the very man who had helped launder the funds used to pay off the truck driver who killed my family.

“Look at this folder,” Miller muttered, clicking on a video file titled FALLOUT_BACKUP_2026.

He pressed play.

The screen flickered to life, showing Jonathan sitting at our dining room table at home, looking exhausted and grim, speaking directly into a web camera.

“If you’re watching this, Hannah, it means I didn't make it,” Jonathan’s recorded voice echoed softly through the tiny office speakers, his eyes swimming with unshed tears. “I found out too late how deep the corruption goes. Veloce isn't just an embezzlement ring; it’s an international syndicate. And your father—Arthur Hayes—is the one who authorized the hit on my car to protect the board from federal indictment.”
