Chapter 8 - The Drive Through the Blizzard

The snow had started falling again by the time I slipped my winter coat back on, locked the front door behind me, and climbed into the driver’s seat of my SUV. The digital dashboard clock read 1:15 AM on Christmas Day.

The streets of Chicago were a ghost town, blanketed in a thick, pristine layer of white powder that muffled the roar of the city. As I drove south toward the lakefront, the heater blowing warm air against my face, my thoughts tumbled over themselves.

Six years ago, Arthur had left a note on our kitchen table too.

“I’m sorry, Elena. It’s the only way to keep you and Grace safe. Don't look for me.”

At the time, I thought it was the cowardly excuse of a man who didn't want to be a father. I had spent years hardening my heart, building a fortress of independence so no one could ever leave me that helpless again. But looking at the tangled web of corporate fraud, federal investigations, my father’s secret syndicate ties, and Moretti Logistics, a terrifying new picture was forming.

He hadn't run away from us.

He had run away from us to keep them from using us as leverage.

My tires crunched over the icy asphalt as I pulled into the deserted parking lot of the abandoned 31st Street dry docks. The skeletal metal frames of rusted cranes loomed like dark giants against the snowy night sky, and the dark water of Lake Michigan churned sluggishly against the concrete seawall.

Parked near the edge of the pier was a single, matte-black sedan, its headlights cut, exhaust pluming softly into the freezing air.

I cut my engine, grabbed my tactical flashlight and my encrypted backup drive, and stepped out into the biting wind.
