Chapter 5 - The Family Alliance

Martha stepped into the kitchen, her eyes darting between David’s flushed, angry face and my frozen stance by the counter. She immediately set the casserole dish down on the island and folded her arms with a practiced, disapproving sigh.
“Oh, good grief, Elena, what have you started now?” Martha sighed, rolling her eyes toward the ceiling. “David has had a terribly stressful week at the office, and you’re in here screaming at him over some teenage nonsense. Honestly, when I raised David, children didn't throw tantrums just to get attention from their mothers.”
I stared at my mother-in-law, feeling a cold, razor-sharp realization cut through the fog of my grief and anger. David didn't learn to dismiss pain, minimize suffering, and prioritize money over human life in a vacuum. It was a family tradition.
“Shut up, Martha,” I said, turning my gaze from my husband to his mother with a look that made the older woman instantly snap her mouth shut.
“Well I never—” Martha gasped, clutching her pearls. “David, are you going to let your wife speak to your mother like that in her own home?”
David stepped forward, towering over me, his face twisted in quiet, menacing fury. “That’s it. You’ve lost your mind, Elena. Grab your keys. You and your daughter are going to go stay at your sister’s place until you calm down and apologize to my mother.”

Before I could answer, my daughter stepped out from the pantry, wiping the tears from her face, her expression hardening with a sudden, fierce strength that mirrored my own.
“We aren't going anywhere, Dad,” she said, her voice steady and clear in the quiet kitchen. “You are.”
