Chapter 7 - The Deed and the Deposit

A cold, humorless smile touched the corners of my lips. David still believed he was the master of a domain built on sand, completely oblivious to the paper trail I had quietly managed over the past three years while he hoarded his paychecks and micromanaged every household expense.

“Your name is on the mortgage, yes,” I said smoothly, reaching into my handbag resting on the counter and pulling out a folded manila envelope. I tossed it onto the kitchen island, right beside Martha’s sweet potato casserole. “It’s a shame you didn't check the county recorder's office before you took out that second equity line of credit last spring.”

David frowned, his eyes darting from my face down to the manila envelope. He reached out with trembling fingers, picked it up, and pulled out the legal document inside.

I watched as his eyes scanned the text. The color drained from his face so fast it left him looking almost ghostly.

“What... what is this?” David stammered, his arrogant posture completely collapsing. “This is a quitclaim deed... signed over to a separate family trust?”

“When my uncle left me that small inheritance three years ago, I didn't spend it on a luxury car or a country club membership like you wanted,” I told him, stepping closer so he could see the absolute resolve in my eyes. “I used it to pay off the remaining balance of the original mortgage when the bank threatened foreclosure during your company’s downsizing. The house was refinanced entirely in my name as sole trustee. You’re just a tenant, David. And right now, your lease is terminated.”
