Chapter 10 - The Ultimatum

The phone in my hand was still active, broadcasting a ragged, terrified silence from downtown.

"Emma..." Robert’s voice finally came through the speaker, stripped of all its bluster, reduced to a pathetic, shaking whisper. "Please. Just... let's talk. We can fix this. Name your terms. Whatever you want from the divorce settlement—the house, the accounts, the cars—it's yours. Just call off your brother."

I didn't answer him immediately. I turned my head slightly, letting the phone pick up the ambient noise of the crowded gymnasium—the murmurs of the parents, the rustle of Ethan’s red dress, and the steady, reassuring breathing of my brother standing beside me.

"You want to talk terms, Robert?" I asked into the phone, my voice steady and cold. "Fine. Here are my terms."

Julian raised an eyebrow, watching me with a look of fierce, unadulterated pride.

"First," I continued clearly, "you will sign an immediate, uncontested divorce decree granting me full custody and sole ownership of everything you tried to strip away. Second, you will walk out of that office tonight with exactly what you came into my life with nineteen years ago: nothing."

"You can't do that!" Robert shrieked, the panic returning full force. "I'll fight you in court! I'll spend every last cent—"

"With what money, Robert?" Julian interrupted, leaning close to the phone. "Your accounts are frozen, your building is repossessed, and your partners are standing in a high school gymnasium watching you lose everything because you couldn't respect your own family."

The line went dead.

Not because the call dropped, but because Robert had finally dropped the phone.

I pulled the device away from my ear, ended the call, and slipped it calmly into my purse. The gymnasium was dead silent, six hundred people watching us without daring to breathe.

Ethan stepped forward, slipping his hand into mine, his fingers warm and strong.

"Come on, Mom," Ethan whispered, smiling down at me with tears shining in his eyes. "Let's go home."
