Chapter 6 - The Vibration in the Purse

The rhythmic, angry buzz of Robert’s name flashing across my phone screen cut through the gymnasium air like an alarm bell.
Around us, the crowd remained frozen in a collective state of suspended animation. Mrs. Henderson had dropped her program onto the floor, her eyes darting nervously between me, Ethan, and the legal document clutched in my trembling hands. The principal on stage was midway through announcing another student's name, but his voice sounded like it was coming from underwater, muffled by the pounding of blood in my ears.
"Mom," Ethan said softly, taking a half-step closer and placing a warm hand over my shivering fingers holding the phone. "You don't have to answer it if you aren't ready. But once you press that button, there’s no going back to the way things were."
I looked down at the screen. For nineteen years, Robert had owned every silence, every decision, and every ounce of confidence I possessed. He had made me feel small, invisible, and completely dependent on his mercy. He had burned my mother’s dress in a backyard barrel, convinced he had reduced my history to ashes.
Yet here stood my son, wearing that exact red fabric like royal armor, handing me the keys to the kingdom Robert thought he ruled alone.
I took a deep, steadying breath, swiped the screen, and pressed the phone to my ear without hitting speaker mode.
"Robert," I said. My voice didn't waver. It was calm, clear, and utterly devoid of the fear he had spent two decades cultivating.
On the other end of the line, there was a heavy pause, followed immediately by an explosion of furious sound.
"Where the hell are you?!" Robert’s voice roared through the earpiece, loud enough that Ethan could probably hear the static hiss. "I’ve been calling for ten minutes! My legal partners are downstairs waiting for the post-graduation dinner reception, and I just got an emergency alert from the commercial leasing registrar saying our office building's primary master deed has been flagged for immediate receivership review!"
He didn't wait for an answer. He was already spiraling into a panic that had nothing to do with me and everything to do with his precious status.
"Some lunatic calling himself a trustee from Vance Holdings just served our firm's managing partner with an eviction notice claiming the entire property lease expired at midnight!" Robert shouted, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "He said the trust is controlled by some ghost named—"
Robert stopped dead.
