Chapter 1 - The Stranger on the Threshold

The cold evening air rushed into the hallway, carrying the faint scent of rain and exhaust fumes. Standing on the porch under the amber porch light was a young man about Harper’s age. He wore a worn canvas jacket, his dark hair damp from the mist, and looked startled to see me standing there instead of Graham.
Behind me, I heard Graham’s hurried footsteps on the hardwood floor.
"Julian," Graham said, his voice tight and strained as he pushed past us into the entryway. "You shouldn't be here."
The young man—Julian—shifted his weight, his eyes darting nervously between Graham, Harper, and me. "My dorm room lease was terminated today, Mr. Graham. The university financial office said the housing hold wasn't cleared, even though you told me the wire transfer went through yesterday morning. I didn't have anywhere else to go."
My heart hammered against my ribs. My dorm room lease. Not Harper’s.
Harper stepped forward, her voice trembling with a mix of disbelief and cold fury. "Dad... what is he talking about? You said you were paying my tuition."
Graham closed his eyes, his shoulders slumping as if a heavy physical weight had finally crushed his resistance. He didn't answer. He just stood in the doorway, caught between the wreckage of his secrets and the family he had built.
Julian finally noticed the tension in the room, his gaze locking onto Harper. "Wait... are you Harper?"
Harper didn't flinch. "Who are you to my father?"
Julian swallowed hard, looking back and forth between us before whispering, "I'm his student. Or... at least that's what he told me when he started helping me last year after my dad passed away."

The front door remained wide open, the chill wrapping around us like ice, while the foundation of our entire twenty-year marriage cracked wide open.
