Chapter 6 - The Voice on the Line

The threat hung in the sterile air of the hospital room like the sharp, acrid smell of burnt wiring.

"Say that again," I whispered. My voice didn't shake. Instead, every drop of blood in my body felt like it had turned to liquid nitrogen, freezing the fear right out of me and replacing it with a cold, absolute rage.

Through the speaker, Arthur gave a low, smooth chuckle, entirely devoid of warmth. “I said, accidents happen when people interfere with business, Lauren. Your mother is sitting right here across from me, and she agrees that it’s high time your grandfather signed over the estate trust. You wouldn't want poor little Noah to suffer for your stubbornness, would you?”

Across the room, the nurse holding Noah went completely rigid, her eyes widening in horror as she overheard the speakerphone.

Before I could fire a single word back, Grandpa Walter’s hand shot out. He didn't hesitate. He snatched the phone right out of my fingers, his face carved out of old granite.

"Arthur," Walter spoke, his voice deep, gravelly, and carrying a thunderous authority that made the receiver crackle. "You miserable coward. If you or your sister so much as breathe in the direction of my great-grandson, I won't just let the federal prosecutors reopen your old wire fraud files. I'll personally hunt you down and finish what we started thirty years ago."

A sudden, sharp intake of breath hissed through the speaker. The smooth, arrogant facade cracked instantly.

“W-Walter?” Arthur stammered, the bravado evaporating from his voice. “How... how are you there? You're supposed to be—registering the transfer papers at the downtown branch!”

"I am right where I need to be," Walter snapped. "And we are coming for you. Don't leave room four-twelve."

Walter ended the call with a sharp tap of his thumb, turning the screen black. He handed the phone back to me, his chest heaving slightly under his wool vest. He looked over at Marcus Vance.

"Marcus," Walter ordered coldly. "Call the federal transport detail. Tell them we're moving the timeline up. We're clearing house tonight."
