Chapter 7 - The Wheels in Motion

The rain outside the hospital window had turned into a torrential downpour, hammering against the glass as Marcus Vance typed furiously on his secure encrypted phone.
"Federal marshals are already stationed two blocks from the hotel," Marcus reported, not looking up from his screen. "They've been tracking Arthur’s offshore shell accounts for six months. The moment we walk into that room with the original asset-trust deeds, the trap springs shut on both of them."
I struggled against the hospital sheets, pain flaring through my fractured pelvis, but I refused to let it stop me. I swung my legs over the side of the bed, biting down hard on my lower lip until a coppery taste filled my mouth.
"Lauren, what are you doing?" the nurse cried out, stepping forward with Noah still cradled securely in her arms. "You can't walk! Your pelvis is fractured!"
"I'm not staying here," I gasped, gripping the metal guardrail of the bed for support. "My son's safety was just threatened by a criminal who has been bleeding my family dry for a decade. I am going to that hotel."
Grandpa Walter didn't try to stop me. He watched me with a fierce, burning pride in his eyes. He reached into his coat and pulled out a sturdy, polished wooden cane, handing it to me like a sword.
"That's my girl," Walter muttered quietly. "Marcus, get the wheelchair. And have security double the guard outside this room. Nobody gets near Noah."
Ten minutes later, wrapped in a heavy woolen coat over my hospital gown, I was wheeled out of the room by Marcus while Grandpa Walter flanked my side like an old general leading a charge.
As we descended in the private hospital elevator, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text message from a local secure relay:
FLIGHT 271 STATUS: AIRSPACE CLEARANCE RESTORED. MILITARY TRANSPORT EVAC ROUTE APPROVED. ETA TO SEATTLE TERMINAL: 45 MINUTES.
May you like
It was Ethan. He was finally coming home.
